The man in the Oval Office has 400-plus screen credits, an Emmy and a voice that could talk a Cronenberg down off a ledge.

Every time President Curtis screams at Rick Sanchez through a wall of monitors, that voice sounds like it should be narrating a documentary about the Dust Bowl. Reader, it has.

The President of the United States (Rick and Morty division) is Keith David. Yes, that Keith David: The Thing, Platoon, the Ken Burns narration, Elroy from Community, the man who gets killed by alien shrapnel in Nope. He's been President Andre Curtis since 2015's "Get Schwifty," which means he has now held animated office longer than any real president is constitutionally allowed to.

Eleven years of being yelled at by a drunk scientist

Curtis started as a one-off gag: a president who needs Rick to save Earth from a giant floating head demanding a hit single. He grew into the only man in the multiverse who can go toe-to-toe with Rick and still make it to the State of the Union.

  • 2015: unnamed president, one crisis, one song about schwifty.
  • The feud years: Curtis and Rick break up, make up, invade each other's personal space, repeat.
  • July 2025: David walks onto Adult Swim's San Diego Comic-Con panel unannounced, and the spin-off is a go.
  • July 26, 2026: President Curtis premieres at 11:30 p.m. on Adult Swim, streaming on HBO Max the next day.

"President Curtis has always been a blast to play," David said when Adult Swim made it official. He also warned about the chaos the man stirs up when there's no Rick around to steal the spotlight.

What the spin-off actually is

Dan Harmon and James Siciliano built it around the crises Rick can't be bothered with: interdimensional diplomacy, paranormal investigations, cryptids, Abe Lincoln's ghost, Amelia Earhart. Stephanie Beatriz and Jim Rash round out the staff, which means Dean Pelton and Elroy from Community are together again, this time with security clearances.

Rick and Morty do wander through the first episode, briefly, because Harmon knows a spin-off has to acknowledge its parents. But the point, he told Deadline, was building Curtis's own staff and world so that "the goal is you feel it is its own show."

Rick gets the cosmic horror. Curtis gets the Loch Ness Monster and a press briefing at four. That is, frankly, the harder job.

Why it's Keith David or nobody

Critics have been split on whether Curtis has enough personality to carry a series, and honestly, a president with no discernible ideology is a bold choice in this economy. What nobody disputes is the instrument. David does bluster with a faint undertow of regret better than anyone alive, and he is the only actor who could make a line like "Timber, b***h" sound like it belongs in a State of the Union.

It took Adult Swim more than a decade and several actual presidents to give this man his own show. He should have been on the ballot.
