Nothing unites a fandom like being told they can't have something. On Thursday, August 27, Big Brother aired its 1,000th episode, evicted Mallory Aurichio, and then announced that the live feeds, the oxygen supply for the show's most committed viewers, would go dark for three days while a secret twist played out.

Julie Chen Moonves's actual advice to the feedsters: "Put your screens away, go outside, smell the flowers."

The feedsters did not smell the flowers. The feedsters posted.

The twist, explained

The 1,000th episode had no Head of Household competition, no Veto, and no BB Blockbuster. Instead, Julie announced that the houseguests would be "transported to Medieval Times. The year? 1,000, of course," and that "someone's game will come to an end before the next live eviction."

Then she showed a teaser with four returning legends, Britney Haynes, Tiffany Mitchell, Keanu Soto, and Cody Calafiore, in full Medieval Times costume, which is either a fever dream or the greatest thing CBS has ever done, depending on how much of the 1,000th episode you'd already sat through.

The twist was announced as "the biggest of the season" and then, in the finest Big Brother tradition, not actually shown in the episode. The show promised a blindside and delivered a scheduling notice.

The feeds came back early

Here's where it gets funny. The 72-hour blackout lasted about 48. After a very loud backlash and some official social accounts polling fans about whether they wanted the feeds back, they returned Saturday evening, a full day ahead of Sunday's episode. Somebody at Paramount looked at the discourse and blinked.

What the feeds revealed, in order:

  • Haley Thogmartin was eliminated in the Medieval Times twist. No vote, no jury. She was just gone, and press were told they'd be talking to her Monday.
  • Drew Campbell won the Week 8 Head of Household. The comp happened sometime Friday after the twist wrapped.
  • Drew nominated Yash Patel, Lala Verrett, and Taylor Brown.
  • Yash won the Veto, because Yash has won approximately everything this season and is apparently made of Velcro.

So who's HoH?

Drew. And Drew is now the most interesting person in the house, because he's the swing.

Quick context for anyone who tuned out during the Survivor crossover chaos: BB28 threw former Survivor players Dee Valladares and Rick Devens into the house alongside BB legend Angela Murray as "Icons," and the Icons have been running the game with a coalition called the Crossovers. Mallory's eviction was Dee's move; Mallory later called Dee and Devens out on her way to the exit and said Drew was "one of the most disliked people in the house."

Now Barrett Pfeiffer is whispering in Drew's ear about finally taking a shot at the Icons. With Yash off the block, Drew has to name a replacement nominee, and as of Sunday afternoon he was leaning toward Rick Devens, who volunteered earlier under the theory that Dee and Angela were the real targets. Rick asked Drew to put up Melody Morris instead. Drew said no.

Rachel Reilly's stated dream for this season was that the Survivor players "run the table." Drew Campbell may be about to flip it instead. Nobody tell Rachel.

What happens next

Sunday's episode showed the twist and the HoH; the next live eviction is Thursday. If Rick goes on the block and doesn't win the Blockbuster, the math is grim for him: Melody, Barrett, and Yash are three votes right there.

Julie wanted you to smell the flowers. The flowers, it turns out, were a distraction while Drew Campbell quietly became the most powerful man in a house full of Survivor winners. Go outside if you want. I'm staying in.
