Why did Lisa Bonet leave A Different World? One season at Hillman, then a decision made off camera

A Different World premiered on NBC on September 24, 1987, with Bonet's Denise Huxtable shipped from the Huxtable brownstone to Hillman College. The pilot drew a 31.3 household rating — the highest-rated series premiere in television history at the time. The season averaged a 25.0 and finished second in the ratings for the year. Reviews were another matter: critics treated it as a thin Cosby Show appendix, and the show had no identity beyond its lead.

What actually changed between seasons

Bonet married Lenny Kravitz in November 1987, during season 1's run, and their daughter Zoë was born on December 1, 1988 — which put her visibly pregnant right through what should have been season 2 production. Debbie Allen, the Howard alumna brought in as the show's creative lead, pitched the obvious solution: write it in.

Bill Cosby, whose company owned the show, said no.

"She's pregnant, Denise Huxtable is not pregnant, Lisa Bonet is pregnant," Allen recalled Cosby telling her, in a 2015 interview.

Allen's account is that Cosby seemed open to the idea for a couple of weeks and then reversed himself, pulling Bonet back to The Cosby Show rather than letting a pregnancy land on a character audiences had watched for four seasons.

"So he took her back, I was so mad at him, I wanted to take her, but I understand, he just wanted her back," Allen said in the same interview.

Kravitz corroborated the sequence in his 2020 memoir. Bonet was not fired from A Different World — she was reassigned within the same producer's portfolio.

How the character was written out

Denise drops out of Hillman, goes home, and is sent to Africa across The Cosby Show's fifth season, which conveniently kept her off screen entirely. She returns in season 6 married to Martin Kendall (Joseph C. Phillips), with a stepdaughter, Olivia, played by Raven-Symoné.

The show got better without her

Season 2 was a rebuild, and the cast list tells the story:

• Out — Bonet, plus Marisa Tomei as Maggie Lauten and Marie-Alise Recasner.
• In — Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks and Charnele Brown as Kimberly Reese.
• Promoted — Darryl M. Bell and Sinbad moved into the principal cast.
• Added — Glynn Turman as Colonel Taylor and Lou Myers as Mr. Gaines.

Allen took over as director and producing force, moved the center of gravity to Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison), and turned a spin-off into an ensemble comedy that ran six seasons and 144 episodes to 1993.

For the record: Bonet's second exit from the Cosby universe was less negotiated. She was let go from The Cosby Show in 1991.
