Alexander Skarsgård spends Wicker as a husband woven out of basket. By the final act, his wife has set him on fire and the whole village wants a wicker spouse of its own.

Black Bear opened the fable in select US theaters on October 23, 2026, nine months after it premiered at Sundance on January 24, and it reaches UK cinemas on October 30, per Wikipedia). Olivia Colman plays a lonely fisherwoman, Peter Dinklage the basket weaver she pays to weave her a husband, and Alexander Skarsgård the husband, in a full practical wicker suit. It runs 105 minutes.

By the last act, Skarsgård's husband has been set on fire by his own wife and left for dead, and the rest of the village is bidding for a wicker spouse of its own. Whether he gets one more scene is the last thing the film decides.

What happens before the credits roll

The ending stacks three reversals into the last act, per JustWatch's ending guide:

  • The fire: The Fisherwoman becomes convinced her Wicker Husband fathered a Wicker Baby with the Bottlewasher's Wife. She throws a lamp at him, he catches fire, and she believes he's dead.
  • The repair: She finds the abandoned Wicker Baby in the forest and takes it in. The Basket Weaver then reveals he's fixed her husband and that wicker husbands can't father wicker babies at all. The couple reconciles, though he warns that the mold spreading through the Husband will get worse.
  • The prize: The Basket Weaver announces his retirement and offers one last Wicker Wife to whichever villager brings him the best gift. The Butcher wins. His bride turns out to be woven from blackthorn, and when she kisses him, her thorns go through his face while the village watches.

The final image before the credits is the Fisherwoman, her Husband and the Wicker Baby riding out of the village on the Basket Weaver's cart, loaded with every gift the villagers handed over.

The village spent the film mocking the woman who married a basket. In the last scene, the basket weaver drives off with their best possessions and leaves them a thorn bride.

Is there a post-credits scene?

No. The credits roll without interruption, with no bonus footage or audio stinger, per Bam Smack Pow, so the cart is the Wicker Husband's last scene. If you do sit through them, a few names explain how the film got made:

  • The source: It's adapted from "The Wicker Husband," a short story by Ursula Wills-Jones.
  • The filmmakers: Eleanor Wilson and Alex Huston Fischer wrote and directed.
  • The suit: Skarsgård's wicker body was built by Joe Dunckley and Weta Workshop, per TheWrap.
  • The music: The score is by Anna Meredith.
  • The cast you might miss: Elizabeth Debicki plays the Tailor's Wife and Richard E. Grant the village doctor. Dev Patel was originally attached to the wicker role before Skarsgård.

The film was shot in Budapest. Colman, for her part, admitted the cast never read Wills-Jones's story before filming.

Not every critic was charmed. TheWrap's Chase Hutchinson, reviewing the Sundance premiere, praised Dinklage for stealing every scene but closed on "what 'Wicker' is lacking most is magic."

Dinklage gets the ending to himself either way. After playing Dexter: Resurrection's billionaire collector of serial killers, he plays a craftsman who sells a village its own punishment and rides off with the payment.
