The fate of Tom Sturridge’s character is yet to be revealed in The Sandman’s upcoming finale, but the comic book’s fans think the shocking plot twist might not be considered a tragedy after all.

It’s almost time for Netflix’s The Sandman to reveal the end of the story in the second season’s part 2, and those who never touched Neil Gaiman’s comic books should be prepared for some pretty disheartening plot twists.

The ongoing second instalment’s first part ended on another shocking turn with Orpheus’ death that Dream granted him, though the consequences of this are yet to manifest themselves in his own final outcome.

However, The Sandman fans are already used to seeing major characters’ departure as something much more meaningful — here’s what Dream’s possible death in the finale would signal.

Will Dream Die in ‘The Sandman’ Season 2 Finale?

Netflix’s TV adaptation is yet to reveal whether it followed Neil Gaiman’s original storyline. In a newly released sneak peek, Dream is seen seeking Destiny's advice, and in their conversation, Dream says that he "deserves" death for what he did, meaning killing his son.

In the comic book series Dream aka The Sandman does experience some kind of symbolic death since he isn’t mortal like humans.

In fact, he dies more like Morpheus himself, deciding to step down from his duties as the one who controls the realm; such a desire is tied to Dream’s suffering after he deliberately lets his son Orpheus die, also realizing he might not have been the best father all those years.

However, this symbolic death of Morpheus doesn’t last long either, with the character going through some major transformation and emerging as a more mature entity, ready to start a new chapter in his immortal existence.

‘The Sandman’ Fans Think Dream’s Thoughts About Death Are Much More Serious

Even though the character deliberately made an agreement with his sister Death that, well, death won’t be able to reach him anyway, the comic book and the show’s fans took notice of Dream’s changed view on his responsibilities and life as a whole, especially after spending almost a century in captivity.

“Dream thinks that he wants to continue existing, but that isn't what he actually believes in his heart of hearts. He's only fooling himself with all his talk about responsibility and rules”, Redditor cubenerd reflected on the matter in a thread several years ago.

“Morpheus always had the choice to leave his responsibilities behind and explore the universe like Destruction, but Morpheus was too committed to his job to do that. Embracing the gift of his sister and making necessary arrangements for a new and better Dream Lord was the only way for Morpheus to leave his island”, another user agreed.

When Will ‘The Sandman’ Finale Be Released?

The show’s season 2 part 2 will arrive on Netflix on July 24.
