The outcome of Ellie’s encounter with Abby in The Last of Us’ season 2 finale remains a mystery until season 3 comes along, but the game is always there to give you some spoilers. Here’s what will likely happen to Ellie in the show’s next seasons.

We might be out of updates on The Last of Us for at least a couple of years by now, but the video game’s fans know there’s nothing as shocking as Joel’s brutal death coming in the show’s third season.

The second instalment’s finale ended on a major cliffhanger, suggesting there might be another victim of Ellie and Abby’s encounter in the Seattle theatre.

Still, with the third season continuing to adapt the original game’s second part, it’s pretty clear that Ellie isn’t going anywhere, at least until the entire series’ finale — and the game does confirm so too.

Can Ellie Be Dead in ‘The Last of Us’ Season 3? (Spoiler Alert!)

No, it’s not Ellie who Abby shoots at the moment when the screen cuts to black — just because these two aren’t done with each other yet.

Quick recap: Their encounter in Seattle ends with Ellie and Abby parting their ways after the latter’s ally and friend Lev convinces her to not kill Ellie.

In the meantime, Ellie goes back to Jackson, but soon comes up with another plan to bring Abby to justice for Joel’s death and kill her, eventually embarking on a new solo journey to California where Abby is at the moment.

When Ellie reaches her destination and finds Abby once again, the two get into yet another fight, though this time it’s Ellie who gets a real chance to kill her longtime enemy.

Emotional highlight: This is the moment when Ellie realizes that Abby’s death won’t bring Joel back and won’t even give her a feeling of satisfaction, but rather will become another torturous memory of killing someone.

The video game’s second part ends with Ellie and Abby leaving each other alone again and Ellie returning to her farm in Jackson where she learns that Dina and her young son have left in an unknown destination.

Who Else Did Abby Shoot in Season 2 Finale?

Apart from Abby’s killing of Jesse, there’s another gunshot aimed at someone else in the theatre, though it’s not Ellie.

Our take: Since there were only Tommy and Dina who, like Ellie, remained alive, it’s very likely that the last scene of the second season’s finale hinted at Abby shooting Tommy.

Just like Jesse, in the video game Tommy is also shot in the head, though somehow he still manages to survive the injury – this, however, comes with its own consequences for his intellectual and physical abilities.

Even though the game’s second part doesn’t mention Tommy much afterwards, it’s implied that he’s relatively well and alive.

When Will ‘The Last of Us’ Season 3 Premiere?

The show’s next instalment will likely arrive on HBO Max sometime in 2027.
