Joaquin Phoenix's return as the Joker could be his ticket to another Oscar, according to fans.
Joaquin Phoenix took home the coveted Best Actor Oscar at the 92nd Academy Awards for his portrayal of the Joker.
He totally crushed it as a new interpretation of the character, beating out some other big names like Adam Driver and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker an origin story for the notorious supervillain we all love to hate.
And Joaquin's portrayal of Arthur Fleck as a wannabe comedian with a serious laughter disorder is nothing short of ingenious.
Fans are eagerly waiting for the sequel that is set to be released on October 4, 2024, starring Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker, of course, and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.
What made fans really wonder is whether Phoenix will outdo his own performance in the sequel to win another Oscar.
In a Reddit discussion fans shared their opinion and remembered some instances of actors returning to the same role after winning an Oscar.
There are lots of examples of actors getting to play the same character after winning an Oscar: Anthony Hopkins played Hannibal after his Oscar-winning performance in The Silence of the Lamb, Jack Nicholson in The Evening after winning the awards for Terms of Endearment, Tommy Lee Jones won for The Fugitive, then played the role again in US Marshalls.
The instances are numerous but there are few when actors repeated their own success in a sequel.
It is very rare for an actor to receive the same praise for a sequel after an award-winning performance in a first movie. However, fans believe Phoenix absolutely nailed the role and may do it again in Joker 2.
Now having Harley Quinn in the story, Joker will certainly enjoy more character development, so we might see him from another angle that will allow Phoenix to unleash the potential in portraying the same character but on his new stage implying new emotions and feelings.
And who knows, maybe Gaga herself is also heading for another Academy Award in her portfolio?
Fans hope the movie won't become just a cash cow as originally it was stated that Joker 2018 is a complete story and there is no place for a sequel.
