In September 2025, HBO officially confirmed that a third season was in development. The story of five women covering up a murder continues with the return of Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Zoë Kravitz, and Shailene Woodley.

Author Liane Moriarty originally planned only one season, but the success compelled her to write a sequel.

But questions remained: what will happen to Bonnie after her confession? How will Renata's life unfold? Most importantly, are viewers ready to dive back into this troubling world? It turns out they are.

When Will 'Big Little Lies' Season 3 Be Released?

The exact date is still unknown. Back in 2019, HBO CEO Casey Bloys was skeptical about the prospects of another season due to the actresses' incredible workload.

Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Zoë Kravitz, and Shailene Woodley are all at the top of their game in Hollywood today, so bringing them together for one project would be a Herculean task.

Furthermore, Jean-Marc Vallée, the director of Season 1 and considered by many to be the heart of the series, passed away in 2021. However, Nicole Kidman had been pushing for a third season for years, and the studio finally gave the green light.

What Will 'Big Little Lies' Season 3 Be About?

Liane Moriarty is currently writing a new book that will serve as the basis for the script, and Francesca Sloane has been commissioned to write the first episode.

Liane Moriarty admitted that she is writing the sequel with the current times in mind:

“Because I wrote Big Little Lies when my children were little and the children in the story are just starting kindergarten and now, of course, my children are all teenagers so they're providing a wealth of teen material.

So, I'm writing a sequel with all the children as teenagers so now the women are the parents of teens.”

In the third season, we'll see the same characters several years after the events of the second season – expect teen drama, new mysteries, and perhaps the return of old ghosts. According to Moriarty, all the main actresses will remain on the project.
