Ian McKellen Teases Return of Two Massive 'LoTR' Characters in 'The Hunt for Gollum'
At the For the Love of Fantasy event, McKellen revealed that fans can expect to see not only Gollum, but also Gandalf (whose participation has already been officially confirmed) and Frodo in The Hunt for Gollum:
“I hear there's going to be another movie based in Middle-earth, and it's going to start filming in May. It's going to be directed by Gollum, and it's all about Gollum. But I'll tell you two secrets about the casting. There's a character in the movie called Frodo, and there's a character in the movie called Gandalf.”
It is likely that Elijah Wood will return to the role of Frodo, though there is no official information about this yet.
There Are Other Members of the 'LoTR' Team Who Will Work On 'The Hunt for Gollum'
Frodo, Gandalf, and Gollum aren't the only characters from the original trilogy who return in The Hunt for Gollum. Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who won Oscars for their scripts for The Lord of the Rings, are the screenwriters for The Hunt for Gollum.
This time, they will have two more co-authors: Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. Their only other credits include The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim and the little-known thriller The Sorrows.
What Will 'The Hunt for Gollum' Be About?
The Hunt for Gollum will reveal the backstory of Gollum and explore the part of his history that the authors did not cover in previous projects – the period between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
Additionally, we may see the earlier history of Gollum when he was still Smeagol and just found the Ring.

The release date for The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled for December 17, 2027.
