Zach Cregger's Weapons is a mystical horror film that has become one of the biggest cinematic surprises of 2025. Cregger presented viewers with a perfect blend of mystery, supernatural terror, and dark humor, creating one of the most powerful horror movies of the year.
Now that the initial excitement has subsided, genre fans are actively theorizing – fortunately, Cregger left plenty of room for that – and wondering what horror project the director will create next.
However, those hoping for a Weapons sequel will have to be patient. A second installment, if it happens at all, is not expected anytime soon.
What Does Zach Cregger Himself Think of 'Weapons 2'?
Zach Cregger is determined to continue working in the Weapons universe. Talk of a sequel began almost immediately after the premiere of Weapons.
One and a half months after the release of Weapons, Cregger confirmed his intention to direct the sequel:
“It is real and I've been talking to Warner Bros. about it. There's a story and I'm pretty excited about it.”
What Will 'Weapons 2' Be About?
The plot of Weapons begins one night in a small town when 17 of Justine's elementary school students suddenly disappear.
An atmosphere of tension and mutual suspicion takes hold of the town as the parents of the missing children and their teacher try to find answers.
It is eventually revealed that, shortly before the children disappeared, a strange elderly woman, Aunt Gladys, arrived in town and began causing chaos wherever she went by using black magic.
Aunt Gladys, played by Amy Madigan – an Oscar nominee for her role in Twice in a Lifetime – proves to be the most unexpected and enigmatic character in Weapons.
Cregger had originally planned to include a chapter about Gladys in the movie but ultimately had to cut it to keep the running time down.
What Does Amy Madigan Think About Reprising Her Role as Aunt Gladys?
Although there is no confirmed casting news yet for Weapons 2, Julia Garner and Josh Brolin could theoretically reprise their roles.
Amy Madigan has already commented on the upcoming film and answered the main question: whether she plans to return as Gladys.
Apparently, the origin of Gladys' witchcraft and the woman herself remain mysteries even to the actress. Madigan stated:
“People ask that question, ‘Is she real or is it this or that?’ I said, ‘Good, you guys figure it out cause I can't answer that.”
When asked about her return to the role of Aunt Gladys, Amy Madigan said:
“That's really the gift of how the movie came out. The other stuff has to do with all sorts of conversations that I would never be privy in and business things like that. But, you know, I love Gladys, so I'll leave it at that.”
When Will 'Weapons 2' Be Released?
Cregger is currently working on a film adaptation of Resident Evil. The new adaptation is scheduled to hit theaters in September 2026. It means that filming for the Weapons sequel won't begin until 2026 at the earliest.
Therefore, 2027 or 2028 are the most realistic release dates for Weapons 2.
