George Martin’s The Winds of Winter has remained in its own production hell for more than a decade, and the writer’s busy schedule suggests the doomed novel won’t get out of it after all — here’s what happened.

Things have been complicated with George Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” long before Game of Thrones wrapped back in 2019, but a new show Martin is set to produce seems to be the biggest threat to “The Winds of Winter” so far.

A sixth novel in “A Song of Ice and Fire" book series, “The Winds of Winter” has been developed by Martin since the early 2010s, with the author himself giving yearly updates on the slight progress, but reassuring fans that “The Winds of Winter” is his top priority.

Well, it might be that positions on Martin’s list suddenly shifted, and the writer will now pay more attention to another TV series which, even more curiously, doesn’t belong to the Game of Thrones franchise.

George Martin to Produce an Animated Movie About Hercules

Martin might not be able to finish his own epic story, but he’s definitely down for exploring a Greek mythical hero’s one as, according to The Hollywood Reporter, “A Song of Ice and Fire” author will be on board for A Dozen Tough Jobs, an animated feature based on Howard Waldrop’s novella of the same name.

The movie will reportedly follow the original book’s storyline, offering a reimagining of the legend about the Twelve Labors of Hercules, though the events will unfold in the Great Depression-era American South.

“If anyone understands the power of epic stories and expansive franchises, it’s George R.R. Martin. With A Dozen Tough Jobs, we’re reimagining a timeless legend through fresh, culturally rich lenses. This isn’t just a retelling — it’s a groundbreaking take, unlike anything audiences have seen before, grounded in history but pushing myth into uncharted territory”, Lion Forge Entertainment CEO and founder David Steward II said in a statement.

‘Game of Thrones’ Fans Think George Martin Fell the Victim of Star Disease

Even though the author was mostly out of the spotlight since Game of Thrones ended its run, some have been suspicious about Martin’s active role in the franchise’s promo all along — and even connected it to his failure to finish the books.

“On one hand, he is producing. Being a producer is not a ton of work, at least not for Martin. He’s not going to be running the production operation on a day to day level. He is a name to attach to the project. BUT….I don’t think George will view it that way. People can talk about the many reasons George won’t finish his work. But the real answer has always been plain as day — George likes being a celebrity. George has always wanted celebrity and fallen for its trappings. HBO learned how to play that like a fiddle. And once George got into Hollywood, he was never going to finish his books. This further confirms that”, Redditor MattTheSmithers explained in a thread.

“STOP IT GEORGE I HATE YOU SO MUCH. This does kinda sound cool but f—king hell finish the f—king books man”, shoshjort urged.

“He is 76 years old. I was hopeful that we'd at least get Winds of Winter and only miss out on A Dream of Spring. But nah. It ain't happening. As poorly handled as it was, at least Game of Thrones gave us some kind of closure”, SoupyStain admitted.
