If you've thought all this time that Labubu reminds you of something, you're right. 40 years ago, Joe Dante showed what would happen if you brought home a seemingly adorable little creature.

Today, everyone is losing their minds over Labubu – those tiny, big-eyed figurines that look like they're plotting something. But this isn't our first rodeo with deceptively adorable creatures that secretly want to wreak havoc.

A generation ago, it was Furby – the demonic robot that learned to swear and laughed at 3 a.m.

But what was the start of this trend? It was Gizmo, the fluffy mogwai from Gremlins. He is the biggest proof that anything too cute is usually too dangerous.

What Is 'Gremlins' About?

The plot of Gremlins takes place in a small town where a boy named Billy lives. On Christmas Eve, Billy's father, the inventor Randall, gives his son a cute creature called a mogwai that he bought from a mysterious store in Chinatown.

In order for the mogwai to remain cute and happy, Billy must follow three important rules: never expose it to sunlight, never wash it with water, and never feed it after midnight. Of course, Billy immediately breaks all three rules.

'Gremlins' Is Based on British Folklore

Before Gremlins, Joe Dante was known for directing The Twilight Zone. Chris Columbus wrote the film's script, and Steven Spielberg was one of the executive producers.

Columbus borrowed the concept of a gremlin from British folklore. It is a small, furry creature and a mischievous prankster that constantly ruins anything left lying around. In the film, gremlins are dangerous creatures capable of harming or even killing people.

'Gremlins' Teaches Us that We Better Be Cautious Around Our Labubus

In Gremlins, water causes the mogwai to multiply and create a horde of gremlins. If you have more than one Labubu at home, just pay attention to how often they turn out to be near water. Maybe their number is increasing for a reason. A creepy reason.

If you hear strange sounds coming from the room where the Labubu is, don't say you weren't warned. And you better not turn your back on them. Just in case.
