But thanks to social media, which has recently become the source of everything, even the overlooked projects are getting a second chance to become everyone's favorite. That’s the case with a 2002 movie Frailty that started to pop up here and there. And people are saying that it’s a real hidden gem of the genre.
What Is Frailty About?
Directorial debut of Bill Paxton, this movie is a perfect blend of everything from mystery to psychological drama. The plot revolves around a father, portrayed by Bill Paxton himself, who believes he is on a divine mission to rid the world of demons disguised as humans. And he takes his two young sons, Adam and Fenton, with him on this terrifying journey.
As the boys grow older, their perspectives on their father's actions change. Matthew McConaughey plays an adult version of Fenton, who, after his brother’s supposed suicide, begins to reflect on the horrific events of his childhood to an FBI agent, unraveling a dark story he was forced to be part of.
McConaughey's performance is brilliant, and the way he managed to capture all the layers of his character is everything. Fenton was tortured as a child, morally tormented by his father's beliefs, but somehow stayed sane. However, the father figure in the film is not only portrayed as a villain, but also as a complex character who is as vulnerable as he is dangerous.
“It's such a well paced and simple story. It's not trying anything crazy and knows exactly what it is. But everything it does it does well, and everything feels so intentional and consistent. Every shot and scene has a purpose and all the performances are great. You know a twist is coming but you can't for certain say what the twist will be,” Redditor JohnCavil said.
The story that unfolds before your eyes is chilling and edgy, keeping you glued to the screen even when you don't want to look. Frailty is a rather disturbing movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end, shocking you with the final twist.
