Young Sheldon Just Barreled Past the Point of No Return, Sealing Its Own Fate

Set in East Texas in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the show chronicles the early years of Sheldon Cooper, the eccentric and highly intelligent physicist first featured in the long-running series, The Big Bang Theory.

However, as the show has progressed, it has recently taken a turn that may have sealed its own fate past the point of no return.

At the heart of Young Sheldon is the relationship between George and Mary, Sheldon's parents. Played by Lance Barber and Zoe Perry, respectively, the couple has been central to the show's narrative since the beginning.

While their marriage has undoubtedly had its challenges, the pair has always managed to work through their problems and come out stronger on the other side.

Young Sheldon Already Made Its Biggest (but Unavoidable) Mistake

However, a recent episode brought George, Brenda, Mary, and Rob together in one room with the birth of Georgie and Mandy's baby.

This resulted in a confrontation between George and Mary, leading to Mary's decision to stay with her mother.

The timing of this event left fans at the edge of their seats as Sheldon is now 13 years old – the same age at which he caught his father having an affair, as previously established in TBBT.

This turn of events is significant not only for the characters but also for the show itself. Previously, there was still a slight chance that Young Sheldon could be a stand-alone show without a strict canon connection to TBBT.

However, many fans believe that the current plot development cannot be easily dismissed, as the show has reached the point in its timeline where George and Mary's marriage is on the rocks.

This, however, means George's canon passing is inevitable – and once that happens, the show could even come to an end.

Some fans of the spin-off who haven't seen or don't even like TBBT, are insisting that they don't want the show to go in this direction as they see it as an independent series.

But although there's no denying that the sitcoms are two separate entities, Young Sheldon is still canon, as it's a prequel based on the characters and stories introduced in the original series.

And while it may not strictly follow all pre-established plot points, it can't be ignored that it's still a part of the same universe.

After all, a considerable portion of TBBT's viewership did tune in to watch it, so it would likely be perceived as disrespectful for a spin-off series to imply that what the viewers saw in the original show didn't occur.

The show's creators have not indicated that George's death will happen in the near future, or at all, for that matter.

It's entirely possible that they have other storylines planned for the future, which would keep the show going for years to come.
