You’ve Been Following the Bag Wrong: The Real Nestle Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookie Secret Revealed
The iconic recipe you can easily use in your own kitchen too.
It’s no secret that almost all of us are big fans of chocolate chip cookies, but quite few may know how exactly this kind of cookie got to be this legendary.
It all started with Ruth Wakefield who once decided to add Nestlé chocolate chips to the cookie dough, eventually getting the most tender cookies with melted chocolate inside. Nestlé quickly got the copyright and since then has been printing the chocolate chip cookie image on its products.
Ingredients: 2 1/4 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 cup (2 sticks) of softened butter, 3/4 cup of granulated sugar, 3/4 cup of packed brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 2 large eggs, 2 cups (12 ounces) of Nestlé Toll House semi-sweet chocolate chips, 1 cup of chopped nuts (optional; if you don't add nuts, you can add 1–2 tablespoons of flour).
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a small bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and salt.
In a large bowl, beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla extract until creamy.
Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Gradually stir in the flour mixture. Add the chocolate chips and nuts (if using). Drop the dough by rounded tablespoons onto ungreased baking sheets.
Bake for 9–11 minutes or until golden brown. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 2 minutes, then move them to a wire rack to cool completely.
