24 Jump Street release date and cast: Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are back 13 years later — and one 22 Jump Street end-credits gag came true
Sony finally dated the sequel nobody believed would happen — and the funniest part is that the movie predicted its own title as a joke in 2014.
It's real, it's dated, and it skipped a number: 24 Jump Street hits theaters December 10, 2027, with Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, and Ice Cube all officially returning — thirteen years after 22 Jump Street made north of $330 million by being a sequel about how sequels are a scam.
Which brings us to the title. Anyone who sat through 22 Jump Street's end credits remembers the montage: a machine-gun parade of fake future sequels — 23 Jump Street: Medical School, 25 Jump Street: A Semester at Sea, 43 Jump Street: Mariachi School, all the way to 2121 Jump Street in space. Sandwiched in that list was 24 Jump Street: Foreign Exchange Students. Twelve years later, the actual franchise is leapfrogging 23 and releasing an actual 24 Jump Street. The gag poster was the real roadmap; the deleted number even has an in-house explanation, per producer Phil Lord:
"We developed a '23 Jump Street,' and I think this is just out of respect for that."
A sequel skipping a number to honor a version of itself that never existed is the most 22 Jump Street joke imaginable, and this time it's the actual studio paperwork.

The particulars
- Behind the camera: Rodney Rothman directs — he co-wrote 22 Jump Street and co-directed the Oscar-winning Into the Spider-Verse — from a script by Rothman, Hill, and Meghan Malloy.
- Lord and Miller produce rather than direct this time, alongside Tatum, Hill, Reid Carolin, Matt Dines, and franchise fixture Neal H. Moritz.
- The lost decade, explained: Sony developed 23 Jump Street after 2014, then shelved it in favor of a Men in Black crossover — the infamous MIB 23 — which then also never happened. The franchise spent ten years hostage to a pun.
- The date is a statement: December 10, 2027 drops Schmidt and Jenko into awards-season December, announced the same day Sony dated Ridley Scott's Treasure Island.
Plot details are locked away, including what undercover assignment could plausibly await two men now pushing their mid-forties. Grad school was already the joke. Foreign exchange remains available.
