30 Years Later, Jim Carrey's Most Iconic Comedy May Finally Get a Sequel
And it wouldn’t be the first one.
31 years ago, in 1994, Chuck Russell's The Mask, starring Jim Carrey, premiered. Originally conceived as a brutal horror film, the adaptation of the Dark Horse comic book was later transformed into an action comedy.
The Mask became a benefit performance for Jim Carrey and instantly turned the comedian into a Hollywood superstar.
Before Chuck Russell's movie, the Canadian actor became famous thanks to his leading role in the comedy Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask only cemented his status as a rising star.
After the success of the movie, Carrey woke up not only a Golden Globe nominee, but also a millionaire. If the fee for appearing in Russell's film was limited to a few hundred thousand dollars, after The Mask the price for Carrey's work increased more than tenfold.
The Mask was the first movie in Cameron Diaz's career. The comedy brought the young actress worldwide fame. Before The Mask, Cameron had no acting experience; she worked successfully as a model, so she desperately needed acting lessons.
Cameron Diaz Is Ready to Join The Mask Sequel On One Condition
And now, three decades later, the actress is ready to return to the iconic role. In an interview with Access Hollywood, Diaz responded to the statement that Jim Carrey is open to reprising the role of Stanley Ipkiss:
“If Jim's on board, I mean, I've been riding those coattails from day one.”
Does this mean that fans of The Mask can now go into full-blown waiting mode? Well, it's worth considering that Jim Carrey has his own conditions for the sequel.
Jim Carrey Needs a Strong Script to Reprise This Cult Role
In an interview with Comicbook, the actor admitted that the most important thing for him is not money, but a worthy script:
“Oh gosh, you know, it has to be the right idea. If somebody had the right idea, I guess… It’s not really about the money.”
Studios should definitely not ignore these claims and hire the best writer they can find – after all, a sequel to one of the most popular comedies of the 90s is at stake.
The Mask Already Has a Sequel
Few people know, but the possible sequel with Carrey and Diaz will not be the first attempt to continue the story of The Mask. When Jim Carrey did not want to star in The Mask 2, New Line Cinema decided to do it without him.
The plot was reworked, and in 2005 a movie called Son of the Mask was released, only to fail at the box office and cause outright anger among fans of the original film.
The sequel lacks the original director Chuck Russell and A-List stars, and the special effects look unrealistically cheap even for the mid-2000s. This story proves that the success of films starring Jim Carrey is largely due to the comedian's personal charisma.
