The more we delve into the origins of evil, the scarier it gets.

The history of horrors knows a lot of follow-ups that explore the obstacles that led to the events of the original movies. Sometimes a prequel can even beat its source by a much more elaborate screenplay, atmosphere, and creepier horror elements.

Here are 6 horror prequels that are killing it, chosen by Redditors.

1. Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016)

First comes a prequel to the 2014 film that follows a family who introduce an Ouija board into their phony seance business, allowing a spirit to possess their daughter. Unlike its predecessor, the critically panned Ouija, it was a huge critical success.

2. Annabelle Creation (2017)

Set in The Conjuring universe, this film gives more insight into the origin of the notorious doll. This prequel is considered an improvement over the first Annabelle movie (2014) that made it possible to continue the franchise with Comes Home (2019).

3. Prey (2022)

A prequel to the first four films in the Predator franchise and set in the 18th century, this sci-fi horror focuses on a young Comanche woman who protects her tribe from a humanoid alien. It’s one of the best horrors of 2022 and a truly perfect prequel.

4. Pearl (2022)

Here is another 2022 masterpiece that was massively popular due to Mia Goth’s stellar performance. The prequel to X (2022) presents an origin story of the title villain, and we all know that she is a star and her path towards freedom is covered in blood.

5. Paranormal Activity 3 (2011)

Set 18 years prior to the events of the first two installments of the Paranormal Activity movie series, this found footage horror exploits all the franchise’s notorious techniques to better explore the origins of the supernatural creatures that creep us out.

6. Final Destination 5 (2011)

This flick wasn't even supposed to happen, but, luckily, we eventually saw a prequel to Final Destination (2000). It offered a solid twist ending that few genre veterans saw coming, and at the same time it explained it all and perfectly filled the plot’s holes.
