These tricks are nothing more than “meh,” but still, it's a lot more nuanced than you think. Let's figure it out together.

There's no debate that RuPaul's Drag Race has revolutionized reality TV since its launch back in 2009. The show has everything the viewers really need: drama, questionable choices, rivalries reconciled, and friendships falling apart.

Yet as the franchise expands on the international level, some moves and tricks have lost their former sparkle. A lot of them just need a fresh angle, while others must go completely (yeah, they are THIS bad). Either way, one thing is certain: we all crave a fresh and innovative approach.

Today we're taking a look at the most annoying and tired stunts that fans wouldn't cry over if they never saw them again. Stick around for #6. You'll be surprised!

The Naomi Scoot: Not Everyone Can Be THAT Girl

The iconic leg-sliding stunt that Naomi Smalls perfected has become the drag race's equivalent of a pop star's signature dance move. Everyone tries it, but few nail it. As Reddit user patinum put it perfectly:

“I've never seen a girl do the Naomi Scoot like Naomi does it.”

Take Irene Dubois's attempt, for example. Her interpretation was awkward and not at all at the level that Smalls did it. And be sure that fans have noticed this slip up.

“Irene was so excited to do it for her lip sync and then went home,” noted Redditor Decoller.

Ouch. As harsh as it is true. I guess to be able to actually nail the so-called Naomi Scoot, you really need to go for it and do it in your own unique way. Copying is never fun after all.

All That Walking for... Absolutely Nothing

When queens make their way to the back of the stage, you naturally expect something dramatic and rewarding for all that wait. Yet it's not how it always goes. At times they just turn around and continue to lip-sync like nothing has happened. Crickets.

“[I’m tired of seeing] when they walk all the way to the back - you expect something big and nothing major happens,” Redditor gabrielleraul said.

If you want to see this move actually done right, you can look no further than Manila Luzon's legendary performance against Trinity The Tuck on All Stars 4. Her walk was justified and we got a cute moment of her leaning back on the wall. It was the correct usage of the move and it was appropriate for Whitney Houston's How Will I Know.

Death Drops Are Boring? Well… Kinda

Now I can't say that death drops are out for good as it still can be done right. But as Redditor Brontozaurus explained:

“[I’m getting tired of seeing] death drops that are just there for the sake of having a stunt, instead of punctuating the right moment in a song.”

And I got to agree. This is all about time and place. Yvie Oddly versus Brooke Lynn Hytes lip-sync was the golden standard in many ways, but most importantly, they both did death drops the right way. That's just one of the reasons why they deserved the double shantay they got that day.

Drag Is Not a Contact Sport, Period

Drag is an art form, not wrestling and I think we can all agree on that. Redditor JRom89 said:

“Intentionally blocking the other queen is an immediate sashay for me.”

That's absolutely spot on, but I would go as far as to add that you can't touch your opponent during a lip-sync. It should be an obvious rule. Yet some queens seem to forget this basic principle.

The most infamous example is the Mimi Imfurst vs. India Ferrah showdown in Season 3. Mimi basically lifted up India, which prompted the latter to scream at the top of her lungs: “Get her off of me!” Yikes. That's exactly why Mimi Imfurst went home that day. It's definitely neither cute nor next level by any means.

Reveal That Is Not Really a Reveal at All

Is that just a big cape you're wearing or is there going to be a big reveal?

As Redditor Friendaim spilled:

“[I am tired of] when they wear a tent over their costume to hide a reveal instead of making it a part of the costume.”

My favorite thing about reveals is the surprise element of it all. Think about Sasha Velour's rose petals in Season 9 (a lot of queens tried to recreate it) or Violet Chachki's tartan reveal in Season 7 (Carson Kressley's reaction is still relatable). That's how you do a reveal. But when there's a huge piece of fabric, it just screams: reveal incoming!

The Ultimate No-No From Rupaul Herself

Now this is a special one. We all know the biggest fan of drag is RuPaul herself. And she too has some rules about doing a gig. In an interview to BuzzFeed Celeb, Ru said:

“I don't care if you're in the backseat of a trick’s car, or if you’re in church, or if you’re on stage, do not take your shoes off, do not take your wig off. That is my number one pet peeve and that is the rule for life. Know that.”

Pretty straight forward and understandable if you ask me. A true professional keeps it together even when falling apart might seem like an easier way out.
