The sci-fi thriller didn’t impress critics back then, but now has a chance to make up for it.

The era of remakes is taking its toll on Hollywood’s most popular tendencies, which has just brought another movie from the 90s a chance for a modern take on the story.

The film starring then rising actors like Josh Hartnett and Elijah Wood had a controversial outcome, becoming a box office hit, but ending up with average scores from both critics and the audience.

However, a remake helmed by the original movie’s director might change things for its legacy.

1998 Sci-fi Horror The Faculty Is Officially Getting a Reboot

According to Variety’s report, a remake for The Faculty, the movie that was quick to become a horror cult classic, is now officially on the list of future releases at Miramax, with the original film’s director Robert Rodriguez so far coming on board as a producer.

The script is up to Drew Hancock who is already no stranger to the genre since his debut movie, a horror comedy Companion, is already playing in cinemas worldwide after garnering positive reviews.

There’s yet no saying about who will direct The Faculty’s remake or who can potentially land the leading roles, as well as whether the movie will get theatrical release or go straight to streaming.

The Faculty Was a Box Office Hit, but Never Got Solid Praise

Set in a small town in Ohio, The Faculty follows a group of high school students who, after their school becomes a target for an alien invasion, start coming up with their own ideas about everything that’s going on; the main problem is that there’s no one else in the town who would take their theories seriously.

Released in theatres in 1998, the movie had a pretty successful run, earning $63 million against the initial budget of only $15 million. It didn’t signalise an overall triumph though, as The Faculty didn’t really succeed in winning critics and viewers over, thus landing a unanimous score of 57% from both parties on Rotten Tomatoes.
