7 Great Chris Evans Movies to Get Over 'Materialists'

Instagram told me not to expect much from Materialists, but at least I thought there is going to be a lovely Chris Evans to enjoy. Well, if you love the actor, better watch other movies with him — I’ll tell you which ones.
Materialists was something we all were waiting for a long time. All the promos were so hot and catchy that there was not a chance that a movie with such a premise and a star-studded cast would be a huge disappointment.
The story follows Dakota Johnson as a matchmaker in New York who's helped countless people find love-but hasn't quite found it for herself, with Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal starring alongside as her two love interests.
While I have questions about Pascal's character (the nonsense surgery at least), I still hate it that Evans played this caricaturish nice loser and ended up sort of a lucky winner, only because his girlfriend has low standards despite claiming the opposite.
So if you are in desperate need to remind yourself how great Evans was in his other projects, this list is for you.
1. ‘Knives Out’ (2019)
IMDb: 7.9/10
Rotten Tomatoes: 97% from critics, 92% from audience
The number one movie in Evans' filmography is Knives Out, a good old murder-mystery with every beloved trope, but still with a modern vibe, which makes it sort of unique.
Evans delivered a career-defining performance as Ransom Drysdale, the spoiled grandson with a sharp tongue and many hidden secrets. And his portrayal of the seemingly charming yet deeply narcissistic character demonstrates his ability to subvert the Captain America image many people love him for.
2. ‘Snowpiercer’ (2013)
IMDb: 7.1/10
Rotten Tomatoes: 94% from critics, 72% from audience
Snowpiercer presents Evans in a post-apocalyptic ice age where humanity's last survivors aboard a globe-spanning supertrain face revolution. Evans' portrayal of Curtis Everett, a reluctant revolutionary leader, is absolutely raw and authentic.
3. ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ (2014)
IMDb: 7.7/10
Rotten Tomatoes: 90% from critics, 92% from audience
The Winter Soldier is a superior entry in the Avengers canon that thrills Marvel diehard fans. Evans elevates Steve Rogers beyond simple patriotic symbolism, creating a man genuinely struggling with modern moral complexities.
The film's paranoid thriller aesthetic allows Evans to showcase Rogers' growing disillusionment with the organizations he once trusted blindly. His relationship with Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow reveals new aspects of his character as well.
4. ‘Captain America: Civil War’ (2016)
IMDb: 7.8/10
Rotten Tomatoes: 90% from critics, 89% from audience
In this action-packed superhero blockbuster with non-cartoonish plot, Evans delivers perhaps his most nuanced MCU performance as Steve Rogers faces his greatest moral crisis. The film forces his character to choose between loyalty to friends and faith in institutions, with Evans navigating these complex emotional waters brilliantly.
5. ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. The World’ (2010)
IMDb: 7.5/10
Rotten Tomatoes: 83% from critics, 84% from audience
One of my favorite movies (it’s the one I took my signature karaoke song from ), Scott Pilgrim's script may not be as dazzling as its visuals, but the film succeeds brilliantly.
Evans appears as Lucas Lee, one of Ramona's evil exes, and delivers an amazing parody of Hollywood action stars. The character's over-the-top machismo and ridiculous stunts provide some of the film's biggest laughs.
6. ‘Sunshine’ (2007)
IMDb: 7.2/10
Rotten Tomatoes: 77% from critics, 73% from audience
Chris Evans plays Mace, the hot-headed engineer aboard a spacecraft on humanity's last-ditch mission to reignite the dying sun. His performance anchors the film's psychological tension as the crew faces impossible odds and mounting paranoia.
7. ‘Gifted’ (2017)
IMDb: 7.6/10
Rotten Tomatoes: 73% from critics, 85% from audience
My favorite movie from the list is definitely this one, where Evans plays Frank Adler, a single man raising his mathematically gifted niece. The role allows Evans to finally show his natural warmth and paternal instincts, creating a believable guardian-child relationship with young Mckenna Grace.
