From original concepts to sequels of popular franchises, these seven upcoming films promise to be at the forefront of the sci-fi genre.

2024 will prove to be incredibly rich in high-profile releases, and fans of the science fiction genre in particular will be feasting. The following list doesn't cover every upcoming sci-fi release, but each of these examples has already garnered a fair amount of hype as critics and audiences alike eagerly await them.

7. Dune: Part 2

Release date: March 1, 2024

Our list begins with the sequel to Denis Villeneuve's critically and commercially successful reimagining of Frank Herbert's original Dune novel. This time, Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet, must wage a full-scale war against House Harkonnen, responsible for the destruction of his family. Given the tremendous success of the first installment, Dune: Part 2 has a good chance of becoming one of the most successful sci-fi sequels in history, as well as one of the most high-profile premieres of 2024.

6. Spaceman

Release date: March 1, 2024

Adam Sandler and his Happy Madison Productions have been marking their place on Netflix for a few years now. This time, however, the famous comedian will be leading the cast of a sci-fi movie not affiliated with his production company. Directed by Johan Renck, director and co-executive producer of one of Netflix's best historical dramas, Chernobyl, Spaceman will tell the story of a Czech astronaut (Sandler) who comes into contact with a mysterious alien (voiced by Paul Dano).

5. Mickey 17

Release date: March 29, 2024

This time around, Bong Joon-ho has taken on another international project, adapting the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton. The plot follows an 'expendable' member of an expedition sent on a suicidal mission to colonize an ice planet. Each time he dies, his memories are transferred to a new cloned body. But is Mickey still the same person, and how long can each of the clones endure such treatment?

The film stars Robert Pattinson, Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo.

4. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

Release date: May 24, 2024

Wes Ball (the Maze Runner trilogy) will deliver a new installment in the rebooted Planet of the Apes franchise. The story will focus on young chimp Noah (Owen Teague) and young human Mae (Freya Allan) as they struggle for the common future of apes and humans. Given the success of the previous movies, both commercially and critically, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has the potential to be another blockbuster.

3. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

The last installment of the Mad Max franchise, Fury Road, was released in 2015, and now, nine years later, we're getting a prequel spinoff dedicated to Imperator Furiosa, though this time she'll be played not by Charlize Theron, but by Anya-Taylor Joy. George Miller, the creator of the franchise, is working on the movie, so we can expect no less high-octane post-apocalyptic action.

2. Borderlands

Live-action adaptations of video games have been gaining momentum lately, as more and more are becoming quite successful and faithful to their source material. Based on 2K's famous Space Western franchise, Borderlands will bring to life beloved characters who will be portrayed by Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Bobby Lee and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Ridley Scott has decided to go with young minds and their fresh takes, handing the reins to horror filmmakers Fede Álvarez and Rodo Sayagues. The plot of their movie, to be released in August, will be independent and take place between 1979's Alien and 1986's Aliens. Scott himself will serve as producer.
