Materialists — June 13
Celine Song’s next project after 2023’s hit Past Lives, Materialists does seem to be a movie less heartbreaking, though we all know we’ll be crying over whatever decision Dakota Johnson’s character will make.
The movie centres on professional matchmaker Lucy who, despite having an expertise in the matter, remains single for way too long.
Soon, however, she meets Pedro Pascal’s handsome billionaire Harry and their romance is just about to blossom when Lucy’s ex-boyfriend John, portrayed by Chris Evans, comes back to her life.
Elio — June 20
Pixar’s long-suffering sci-fi animated movie pushed back by numerous sequels and its own production problems, Elio will finally be out this summer, possibly keeping the studio’s trend with billions of dollars in the box office.
This time the movie will revolve around eleven-year-old boy Elio Solis who accidentally becomes the intergalactic ambassador of planet Earth after making contact with the aliens, now having to deal with all the numerous issues intergalactic communities have had for a pretty long time now.
F1 — June 27
Brad Pitt’s upcoming sports drama is one of the most exciting releases this year, tempting its potential audiences with action-packed scenes shot on actual tracks during Formula One.
F1 has a pretty familiar sports-related premise, following Pitt’s Sonny Hayes, a Formula One experienced driver who used to have a lot of success in the 1990s, but had to retire after a horrible crash.
Things change when Sonny gets a call from Formula One team owner and friend Ruben asking him to come out of retirement to mentor rookie prodigy Joshua "Noah" Pearce for the upcoming competition.
Weapons — August 8
If you thought one horror movie starring Julia Garner wasn’t enough this year, there’s definitely some good news for you.
Zach Cregger’s Weapons will star Fantastic Four: First Steps’ actress as a teacher whose entire class vanishes into the woods one day, leaving the entire community questioning what happened and whether evil forces might be involved.
Honey Don’t! — August 22
A follow-up to 2024’s Drive-Away Dolls and a second part of a potential trilogy, Ethan Coen’s detective comedy will once again star The Substance’s actress Margaret Qualley opposite Aubrey Plaza and Chris Evans.
The movie will revolve around Qualley’s Honey O'Donahue, a private investigator who embarks on her own investigation of a series of deaths after figuring out it has something to do with a mysterious church.
Coming as yet another work of Ethan Coen solely after the brothers’ duo fell apart, Honey Don’t! promises to be a movie just as compelling and hilariously witty as the Coen brothers’ comedies released decades ago.
Lurker — August 22
Coming as yet another potential hit from Mubi, the studio that distributed the Demi Moore-led Oscar-winning horror The Substance, Lurker is an intriguing drama following a retail employee who suddenly befriends a rising star, but things get complicated as he starts getting to know this star better.
Having premiered at Sundance Film Festival back in January, Lurker is a critical darling months before arriving in theatres, currently boasting of a critical score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.
