It's hard not to get gripped by a movie about people surviving against the odds. There's something heroic, frightening and just a little bit too real that keeps us watching and hoping the protagonists make it out alive.

Here are 7 of the most underrated survival movies available to watch on Netflix right now, ranked according to their Rotten Tomatoes score:

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 17%

A German thriller about two brothers and a group of their friends who go on a hike in the wild. There is clearly some backstory with the group, which creates its own tension. But that seems less of an issue when they realise they're being hunted for sport.

It gets a low score on Rotten Tomatoes, but is gripping and runs for less than an hour and a half.

6. Broad Peak (2022)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 48%

The true story of legendary Polish mountaineer Maciej Berbeka and his attempts to climb Broad Peak, one of the highest mountains in the Karakoram region on the borders of China, Pakistan and India.

Spanning a total of 24 years, the film chronicles Berbeka's first attempt in 1988 at the age of 34 and his subsequent attempts in his 50s.

5. Hold the Dark (2018)

A wolf expert is hired by a local woman to help track down a pack of wolves in a remote Alaskan village after they kill three small children, including her own.

He soon finds himself drawn into a mystery. And he learns that the woman's husband, who has returned from war, is out to kill her.

It's an authentic Jeremy Saulnier film that impressed some viewers but left others confused.

4. Against the Ice (2022)

Based on real events, this movie was written by and stars Nicolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones ). As the title suggests, it's a classic 'man against the elements' movie. It's not exactly groundbreaking, but it features strong acting and some stunning cinematography.

Set in 1909, the film follows the exploits of Danish explorer Captain Ejnar Mikkelsen and his crew as they travel to Greenland to recover the records of the ill-fated Danish Expedition of 1906-1908.

3. Below Zero (2021)

This Spanish action thriller received more than 47 million views within a month of being made available to subscribers.

Two police officers transporting a group of prisoners in an armoured van lose communication and become separated from their escort vehicle. One of the officers leaves to seek help, but doesn't return. When the other goes to find him, he discovers his partner and the escort officers dead. A shot is then fired at him...

2. Arctic (2018)

Mads Mikkelsen stars as Overgård, a man stranded in the Arctic after a plane crash, in the directorial debut of Brazilian former YouTuber Joe Penna.

Surviving in the wreckage of the plane, Overgård sends out daily distress signals. When a helicopter arrives to rescue him, it crashes, killing the pilot and seriously injuring the co-pilot. Overgård finds a map in the helicopter and must decide whether to stay with the injured co-pilot in the safety of the wreckage or risk going to a nearby shelter for help.

A tense thriller that explores the lengths to which people will go to protect themselves.

Some members of a survivalist training group begin to question their instructor's methods after one of them is accidentally killed. Others in the group feel that what happened at the camp should be kept private. And when some try to leave the camp, others hunt them down to silence them.
