Abbott Elementary season 6 premiere date and cast: Gregory's secret plan for Janine is out
Gregory has a new title, a ring in the works, and one coworker he really didn't want finding out.
Abbott Elementary returned for season 6 on October 7, 2026, in its usual Wednesday 8:30 p.m. slot on ABC, now right after the Scrubs revival. New episodes hit Hulu the next day. The season runs 22 episodes, and ABC renewed it during season 5's run, after the season 5 finale saved Abbott from closing.
The premiere, "Jungle Classroom," was written by creator Quinta Brunson and directed by Randall Einhorn. It's Development Day: Janine turns her classroom into a full jungle while everyone tells her it's a bad idea, Melissa (Lisa Ann Walter) fights to get her room back and settles into a new union role, Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph) turns to Jacob (Chris Perfetti) for help, and Gregory (Tyler James Williams) starts his first day as assistant principal, which means a new working relationship with Ava (Janelle James).
The plan (spoilers for the premiere)
The episode's last-minute reveal: Ava knows Gregory is planning to propose to Janine. She heard it from her boyfriend O'Shon, who had connected Gregory with a jeweler. Gregory hasn't told Janine, so now he's keeping the biggest secret of his life with Ava, of all people, in the loop.
The proposal is now a secret shared by Gregory, a jeweler, Ava's boyfriend, and Ava. Janine is not on the list.
The producers aren't stalling, either. Executive producer Patrick Schumacker told TV Insider that some big episodes about the proposal are coming early this season:
"We will continue toward the proposal."

Brunson, meanwhile, has promised that the Janine and Barbara "love affair will resurface very clearly this season."
What's next
- October 14, "Check-Ins": Gregory struggles to juggle both of his jobs, Jacob and Melissa can't agree on anything, Barbara handles a delicate situation with a student, and Janine checks in on Courtney.
- October 21, "Tryouts": The step team tries out for a major competition, Melissa and Barbara take a special education certification course, and Janine, Gregory, and Jacob meet a new substitute.
The returning cast is the same core seven, with William Stanford Davis as Mr. Johnson. Geoffrey Owens joins as the district's new superintendent, the man who gives Gregory his promotion.

ABC has already tested what happens when Abbott airs later. It opened season 4 at 9:30, and same-day audiences dropped to 1.89 million before the network moved the show up an hour midseason. The It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia crossover that followed drew 8.05 million viewers across platforms in a week, and The Hollywood Reporter noted that about 39 percent of them watched on Hulu or Disney+.
