After Episode 4, Severance Fans Hope This One Storyline Won't Ruin the Whole Show
We've seen too many writers decide to do that and end up doing badly.
The fourth episode of Season 2 of Severance had us all on edge. Irving's surreal dream, the strange clones, the disturbing story of Dieter Eagan and of course the first intimate scene between Mark and "Helly."
Fans waiting for these two to get closer were disappointed rather quickly – Helena literally stole that moment from Helly. Let's face it, Irving's attempt to drown Helena was oddly satisfying. In a way, she deserved it.
But the satisfaction quickly turned to worry. What if Helena/Helly is now pregnant with Mark's child, and what if this was all planned in advance?
Severance Fans Already Hate the Unconfirmed Pregnancy Storyline
The Helena pregnancy theory is new and unconfirmed, but fans are already hating it. Reddit user Designer_Mark_864 wrote:
“Please please please do not use the most tired of TV tropes [sex automatically causes pregnancy] in Severance. That would be lazy and stupid, something the creators don't seem to be.”
Almost every fan of the series is hoping that the pregnancy will not be confirmed. And there are quite substantial reasons for that.
There Are Too Many Reasons Why This Plot Choice Would Be a Disaster
So far, Severance has been nothing but a delight for fans, and if the pregnancy storyline is confirmed, it will be the first major reason for criticism.
The pregnancy arc can't be developed without taking a lot of screen time away from other storylines and mysteries – and there are so many of them already that the narrative simply won't be able to withstand the pressure.
Also, even given that Severance is a pretty dark and even depressing show at its core, the forced pregnancy trope would be too much even for it, not to mention the fact that it's an overused plot device on television.
There Are Hints That the Pregnancy Theory May Be True
But where does this suspicion come from? It seems that the writers of Severance have been hinting at it since the beginning of the second season.
There are two scenes in the opening credits that confirm this assumption. In the first, Mark is lying on a bed with a dozen babies dressed in office clothes, and then, you can see a baby with Kier's head at Mark's feet.
Also, in the first season, Mark mentions the fact that he and Gemma could not have kids, and as we know, the writers of Severance do not tell us information that will not be important in the future.
Moreover, the foreshadowing of this storyline could be the story of Gabby, the wife of a senator, who was severed to give birth to a child.
Fans Suggest That Mark Was Chosen for This Purpose From the Beginning
Redditor TheRedVibe suggests that Mark was originally chosen to conceive the Eagans' heir with Helena, and what's more, he himself is a descendant of Kier.
According to this theory, Mark's ancestor is Kier' twin, Dieter. Helena calls herself "pure Eagan," which suggests that not only Kier, but possibly other Lumon CEOs, were born as a result of incest.
Perhaps Mark and Helena's child is meant to be the new "pure" vessel into which Kier's consciousness will be transferred.
