The Spy Kids’ actor didn’t have the best time while starring as Nightcrawler for the first time, but it seems like Marvel’s upcoming blockbuster also unveiled something that Cumming never thought he would be doing now.

Superhero movies are often regarded as all fun and joy for both its viewers and production team, though sometimes things are far from marvellous even when it comes to Marvel’s epic films.

Many movies like this were rumoured to have an even more epic drama behind the scenes, including Bryan Singer’s X2 that became one of Marvel’s infamous projects for many reasons.

Despite becoming a critical darling and a box office giant, X2 wasn’t so nice to some of its leads, including Nightcrawler’s actor Alan Cumming.

The traumatic experience, however, is now all gone thanks to Marvel’s upcoming Avengers: Doomsday that Cumming says proved him capable of many things he never expected to see in his 60s.

Alan Cumming Says Filming ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Is “Really Healing and Really Nice” After ‘X2’

Despite having risen to stardom thanks to Singer’s superhero flick, Cumming feels like Avengers: Doomsday is a much better instalment for many reasons — including the vibe on the movie’s set.

“I just came back. It was amazing. It was actually really— in a sort of ooey, gooey way, it was really healing and really nice to go back to something that it was a terrible experience when I did it the first time”, the actor revealed in a new interview with People, adding that Doomsday is “a great film”.

Cumming’s not so subtle reference to his time filming X2 comes as yet another confirmation of the mess that the entire cast and crew had to experience while working on the movie.

In fact, Cumming was also one of those to address the issue several years ago, saying that X2’s actors were manipulated by their contract restrictions.

“It was dangerous, it was abusive, and the studio didn't care. All the actors said something and they still just went: 'Oh, nevermind. It's only gonna be a few more weeks, don't worry. And it's gonna make a lot of money’”, the actor once said during his appearance on the White Wine Question Time podcast back in 2021.

Alan Cumming Never Thought He Would Be Doing Superhero Movies In His 60s

Now that the actor is getting back to the role he reprises almost twenty years later since X-Men: The Last Stand was released in 2006, it definitely felt like something new for Cumming who was out of the superhero world for way too long.

However, the actor admitted he was having fun while filming Doomsday, especially since he realised he’s still capable of acting like a superhero so many years later.

“It was actually really great to go back. And especially, I’m 60 years old. I did not think I would be doing stunts, playing a superhero in my 60s. So that was great. And everyone was really nice”, Cumming added.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theatres worldwide on December 18, 2026.
