Extreme conditions on set.

One of Alicia Vikander's most memorable experiences during the production of Anna Karenina was filming in the remote countryside outside St. Petersburg, Russia.

The shoot took place amid brutal winter conditions, with temperatures plummeting below -40 °C. Despite the extreme cold, Vikander endured five days staying in a rustic cabin that lacked hot water and was furnished with only benches instead of beds, making her stay physically demanding and challenging. During this time, she faced not only the freezing temperatures but also the dangers posed by the wild wilderness surrounding her location.

Russian security guards were stationed nearby to ensure her safety and that of her co-star Domhnall Gleeson from the threat of wild wolves and bears that roamed freely in the deserted area. The harsh environment added a layer of authenticity to the filming process but also tested the resilience and endurance of everyone involved. Vikander recalls this period as one of her most intense yet rewarding experiences on set, highlighting both the physical hardships and the unique adventure it provided.
