A look back at the excellent season that started it all. What is the highest rated Fallout episode? We have all the answers.

Unlike many video game adaptations, Fallout does not tell the specific story from the games. Instead, it creates its own within the familiar and beloved settings. And that's one of the reasons why the show has become this successful.

Season 3 was recently announced six months before Season 2 even hits Prime Video, which makes now the perfect time to look back and appreciate the series a bit more than usual. These are all 8 episodes of the first season, ranked from just good to “we need some more” by IMDb.

The Head (Episode 3): Things Get Weird

  • IMDb Rating: 7.9/10.

When the lowest rating your show gets is 7.9, you know you're on to something good. The Head follows our unlikely duo (The Ghoul and Lucy) on their hunt for Wilzig's head. Meanwhile, Thaddeus and Maximus are in a full-blown buddy comedy.

While some reviewers pointed out that the dialog could have had more depth, the chemistry between Lucy and The Ghoul makes up for it. Besides, Episode 3 still delivers dark humor and some natural character development, even if they're just hunting for a severed head.

The Past (Episode 5): Secrets and Lies Underground

  • IMDb Rating: 8.0/10.

The exact episode that got us all intrigued about the vaults. The Past takes a closer look at the politics of the vault, really pushing the show's ability to handle multiple storylines. Lucy's alliance with Maximus and Betty's power play in Vault 33 were an interesting dynamic to follow.

It might have been a little slower paced, which explains its ranking. But it's episodes like this one that can really establish great world building.

The Target (Episode 2): Knights & Ghouls

  • IMDb Rating: 8.1/10.

After a strong pilot, this episode continued the fun. In The Target, Lucy meets Wilzig and The Ghoul. Meanwhile, Maximus enters a fallen knight's armor.

“I really love Lucy's naivety. I look forward to her growth in the wasteland. Reminds me of when I first played Fallout 3 at the start and how I played at the end of my first playthrough,” Redditor left4dread wrote.

Episode 2 excels at bringing our main characters together in organic ways while expanding the show's world. Everything is dangerous, exciting, and slightly absurd. In short: everything feels like Fallout.

The End (Episode 1): Welcome to the Wasteland

  • IMDb Rating: 8.2/10.

The pilot episode does what a pilot should do. It sets up the world, hooks you in, and makes you want more. Episode 1 is a great example of staying true to the world you're building, which helps you earn the trust of old-time fans and lure in newcomers with the accessibility of the story.

“It's an opening that gets you hooked, and I will definitely going to watch remaining episodes of season 1,” RM851222 on IMDb said.

The Trap (Episode 6): Vault Secrets

  • IMDb Rating: 8.3/10.

This episode turns up the intensity while still maintaining the show's signature dark humor. The politics of the Vault become even more complicated, and The Ghoul's backstory provides more emotional investment for our favorite wanderer.

“I thought the pilot was excellent, but this one was fantastic. It did a near perfect job of bringing all the main characters together and pushing the story forward,” maddmaxx46 on IMDb shared.

The Radio (Episode 7): Tensions Rise Underground

  • IMDb Rating: 8.3/10.

Episode 7 features the hilarious scene of Lucy being expelled to the surface. The plot starts coming together as our characters face increasingly difficult choices. Though some fans are still struggling to connect with Lucy and Maximus' chemistry.

“I love this show, but Lucy and Maximus have about as much chemistry as oil and water,” frederik-atak on IMDb wrote.

The Ghouls (Episode 4): A Lot of References to the Games

  • IMDb Rating: 8.4/10.

As Lucy and The Ghoul struggle with their moral dilemmas, Norm's investigation of Vault 32 adds further complexity to the plot. The episode is packed with Easter eggs for game fans, while telling a strong story in its own right.

This is Fallout at its best, mixing action, moral complexity and world-building in perfect proportion.

The Beginning (Episode 8): Season Finale

  • IMDb Rating: 8.9/10.

That's right, the highest rated episode is the finale. Lucy reunites with her dad, but he's being held by the mysterious Moldaver. Well, turns out Hank isn't just your average Vault dweller. He's actually a Vault-Tec employee who's been in cryo-sleep since the bombs dropped in 2077.

The Beginning brought us many twists and turns that made us want Season 2 so much more. But thankfully, with the new schedule, we may get new seasons sooner than we think.
