Apple TV+'s Most Overlooked Police Drama With 100% on RT Is Renewed for Season 2

Although Women in Blue was critically acclaimed, it wasn't a hit with viewers. Now that the show has been renewed for a second season, here's a reminder of why the first season is a must-see.
Last year, Apple TV+ released Women in Blue, a police drama inspired by real events. It's a project that was made with great love and 100% involvement. While the show received rave reviews from critics, it was criminally overlooked by viewers.
Now that Women in Blue has been renewed for a second season, it's time to revisit Season 1 and explain why this intense story deserves your attention.
What Is 'Women in Blue' About?
Mexico City, 1971. Four women – Maria, Valentina, Gabina, and Angeles – decide to challenge conservative society and join the first female police unit.
However, they soon realize that the creation of their small squad is merely a ploy by the authorities to divert the press's attention from a serial killer targeting young women.
Despite being doubted by everyone, the policewomen conduct their own investigation to stop the killer.
'Women in Blue' Is Partly Based on Real Events
Director and producer Fernando Rovzar drew inspiration from the real-life stories of Mexico's first female police officers, who began working in the early 1970s. The Mexico City police actually created the female unit to distract people from real problems.
Rovzar decided to add a fictional plot to the show: the search for a serial killer. This connects the past with the present and highlights the still-relevant problem of femicide in Mexico.
'Women in Blue' Female Empowerment Is Not Flat And Straightforward
On-screen female empowerment is not limited to stereotypes such as deftly handling a gun and effectively detaining criminals. The superpower of female police officers is obtaining important information through cunning and resourcefulness.
This sometimes involves eavesdropping on colleagues' conversations, secretly questioning witnesses, and breaking into the evidence room without permission.
The show's creators clearly reference 1980s crime thrillers, in which female detectives fought through misogyny to earn their bosses' respect.
The Show Will Keep You on the Edge of Your Seat With Its Twisted Detective Intrigue
Women in Blue seems slow at first, but it quickly picks up speed once the four partners begin an unauthorized investigation.
The detective storyline is written in the tradition of David Fincher's best thrillers. It is nearly impossible to figure out who the killer is because the plot is so twisted and multilayered.
