Netflix’s live-action adaptation only just dropped, and we’re already getting another movie about Aang announced. Why would we need it if we have a series already?..

Summary:

  • The original Avatar: The Last Airbender by Nickelodeon is beloved by millions of fans around the world.
  • The live-action Avatar adaptations, including the fresh Netflix TV show, didn’t fare well in fans’ eyes.
  • Creators of the original series announced an animated movie that’s scheduled for a 2025 release, and fans are going ballistic over it.

Yesterday, Netflix released the first season of its live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender TV show, and after a momentary stellar start, its ratings plunged into the abyss.

Today, the show’s Critic Score on Rotten Tomatoes is sitting at 59%, but you know what? Forget about it. We already have yet another Avatar project coming up, and this time, it’s a movie — an animated one, thankfully.

Even since the original series ended, the Avatar franchise hasn’t been doing exactly well (if we’re not talking about James Cameron ’s Avatar, of course). With an absolute disaster of a live-action movie adaptation and an admittedly questionable fresh live-action TV show, the Nickelodeon animated series remain undefeated to this day.

But if something doesn’t work, you just have to try again! And again. And again…

The recently created Avatar Studios announced its work on three (!) separate Avatar projects in June, and now, the first one gets a release date: it’s scheduled for October 10, 2025. Thankfully, it won’t be another (miserable) attempt at a live-action adaptation; instead, it will be an animated movie following Aang, Katara, Sokka, Zuko, and Toph as they navigate their late twenties.

Sounds weird, but we’re willing to wait and see how it turns out.

Avatar Fans Are Starved for More Nickelodeon Stuff

Between a horrible 2005 live-action and a better-but-still-not-amazing 2024 TV series, Avatar: The Last Airbender fans have only been dreaming about one thing: more good old Nickelodeon stuff. The newly-announced untitled movie is something no one asked for but everyone’s happy to learn about, especially since the original TV show’s creator Lauren Montgomery returned to direct the upcoming film.

Fans are going ballistic after the announcement, cheering and celebrating the return of the original Avatar and his gang.

Many people even claim they’d rather wait for the sequel to the OG series than watch the new Netflix adaptation, despite it receiving generally positive fan reviews.

Nickelodeon making a full-blown Avatar: The Last Airbender movie is the best news any fan of the original series could have hoped for, and we’re all here for it.
