The show’s second season has already introduced a new character who might provoke a shocking plot twist in the next instalment.

House of the Dragon ’s season 2, released back in 2024 after two years of wait, has had its reasons to be harshly slammed by audiences, but it did at least one good thing not many have managed to grasp so far.

Despite not offering a TV version of the most exciting events described by George Martin in Fire & Blood, the show’s disappointing second season made a subtle introduction for an upcoming major plot twist that is likely to gain an even more importance than the highly anticipated Battle of the Gallet.

Additionally, House of the Dragon might even get some praise for it after all, since its major change from the original book this time paved the way for an even more shocking outcome.

The First Battle of Tumbleton Will Show How Tables Turned for Rhaenyra

As the show’s third season is now definitely getting into that war between the Greens and the Blacks, fans might expect many huge battles to be featured in the upcoming episodes, though the First Battle of Tumbleton is the one to have a major impact on everything happening right after.

In George Martin’s book, the battle will see Ulf and Hugh’s betrayal of Rhaenyra who they swore to serve as dragon riders in season 2; this plot twist might be used by House of the Dragon’s next season to demonstrate how things can shift in Rhaenyra’s position that seemed unbeatable by the end of the instalment.

Since betrayals are quite a common thing in Westeros, it might not come as a big surprise for Rhaenyra, but definitely will become a huge loss of two dragon riders swept by their greed and higher demands for compensation.

House of the Dragon’s Hugh The Hammer Is a Bigger Evil Than in George Martin’s Book

Just like its famous predecessor Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon has been heavily criticised for staying away from Fire & Blood’s plot line, though in this case it might be for good.

For now it seems like the show deliberately chose to build a new personality for one of the most hated characters in the original novel, introducing him as a kind and noble family man making his service to the country a top priority.

This is the reason why Hugh’s betrayal of Rhaenyra after she doesn’t agree to his new conditions will definitely feel unnatural, but still compelling and plausible enough, since this is what George Martin has built his fictional universe around.

Hugh’s sudden change of character will add a new layer to the high-scale drama that House of the Dragon’s season 2 lacked all along.
