It’s about time someone showed those pesky VIPs their place once and for all.

Summary:

  • After its premiere in 2021, Squid Game kept lowkey about Season 2 for almost three years.
  • On the recent Netflix earning call, the streamer’s CEO announced Squid Game S2’s release window.
  • The new series is set to premiere in the second half of 2024, but no exact date is known yet.

Immediately after its premiere, Squid Game took over the world, becoming the most successful foreign TV show in the history of Netflix and a full-blown cultural phenomenon all around the globe. With merchandise, recreations, and millions of fans, the show’s creators had their work cut out for them: people wanted more of it.

But Squid Game has been surprisingly quiet for the past three years, clearly cooking up something big. Now, they finally gave a much-anticipated update on Season 2!

Squid Game S2 Release Window Revealed

After a three-year-long wait, Squid Game’s future was uncovered at Netflix’s recent first-quarter earnings call. According to THR, Squid Game was named as one of the streamer’s original TV shows that are set for a 2024 release date, alongside The Night Agent S2, Outer Banks S4, Emily in Paris S4, Cobra Kai S6, and Ryan Murphy's Monster S2.

Squid Game Season 2 will premiere in the second half of 2024, though the exact date is unknown. The lack of specifics can’t ruin fans’ excitement, considering how long it took for Netflix to even acknowledge that S2 was still in active production.

Squid Game Was Making Rounds Even Without S2

Even during the frustratingly long period of waiting for any meaningful updates, Squid Game was making rounds. First, famous YouTuber Mr. Beast recreated the iconic games on his channel, including a massive $456k top prize and a bunch of happy participants competing in the same challenges as the iconic TV characters.

Later, Netflix launched Squid Game: The Challenge which also invited real people to partake in the challenges for the even more mind-blowing $4.56M prize pool; and then, Prime Video ordered Beast Games from Mr. Beast, raking the total haul sum even further — up to $5M — and including a whopping 1,000 live contestants.

Whatever is coming in Netflix’s Squid Game Season 2, it better be worth the wait: otherwise, viewers will opt for reality versions of the idea, instead — granted there are quite a few of those to choose from.
