Five years after Amazon announced it, the franchise about manufactured people finally manufactured a show.

Blade Runner 2099 arrives November 25 on Prime Video — all eight episodes at once, the day before Thanksgiving. The limited series is set fifty years after Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049 in a Los Angeles the official materials call "reborn," and the new trailer that premiered at New York Comic Con on October 10 makes the power balance explicit: humanity is no longer the force shaping the city's future.

The two leads are built on inversions of the franchise's oldest rules. Michelle Yeoh plays Olwen, a replicant working as a Blade Runner — the hunted species doing the hunting — who is in the final days of her life. Hunter Schafer plays Cora, a fugitive and a human pretending to be a replicant: after forty-four years of stories about machines passing as people, the person is now passing as the machine. Cora takes on one last identity as a Blade Runner and is forced to partner with Olwen to track down a runaway.

"…a runaway hiding the truth that could collapse the city."

— Prime Video's official synopsis

Showrunner and creator Silka Luisa (Shining Girls) runs the series; Ridley Scott executive produces alongside Alcon's Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, and Shōgun director Jonathan van Tulleken handles the first two episodes. The project was first announced in November 2021 and titled in February 2022 — a five-year road from press release to premiere.

The cast beyond the poster

  • Leads: Michelle Yeoh (Olwen) and Hunter Schafer (Cora).
  • Series regulars: Dimitri Abold (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) and Lewis Gribben (Somewhere Boy).
  • Recurring: Tom Burke, Sheila Atim, Matthew Needham (House of the Dragon), Daniel Rigby, Johnny Harris, Amy Lennox, Katelyn Rose Downey and Maurizio Lombardi.
  • The branding: the NYCC materials ran under "More Human Than Human" — the Tyrell Corporation's own sales slogan, now doing PR for the third generation in a row.

A franchise that was never a hit

The commercial history here is genuinely strange. Ridley Scott's 1982 original flopped in theaters and then spent two decades becoming the most influential science fiction film of its era. 2049 earned rapturous reviews and roughly $267 million worldwide against a budget north of $150 million — a disappointment by blockbuster math.

Blade Runner has been culturally central and commercially underwhelming for forty-four years. Television is the first format where nobody gets to see the box office.

Don't miss: Without the CGI suit, James Spader's Ultron is scarier than he ever was in Age of Ultron

The "limited series" label and Olwen's countdown-clock mortality suggest a story with a built-in ending. Whether November 25 delivers a goodbye or a pilot in a trench coat is the thing Amazon isn't saying.
