The actor’s sports drama has become Apple Originals’ highest-grossing movie in just several days, and it might be the biggest reason why a continuation is discussed — with Tom Cruise somehow being involved.

Brad Pitt’s F1: The Movie has gone right off to the races ever since it premiered on June 27, turning into the world box office’ massive hit after the opening weekend.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the film follows former racer Sonny Hayes as he gets back on track decades after an accident almost ended his entire career.

Now that F1: The Movie is out there breaking records and potentially planning to bring some profit to Apple Originals within a couple of the upcoming weeks, talks about a sequel are getting louder — and there’s one more actor that both Pitt and Kosinski would die to see in there.

Brad Pitt Says ‘F1: The Movie’ Sequel Shouldn’t Be About His Sonny Hayes

The actor has recently been in all places at the same time while promoting the hit movie, so no wonder he couldn’t get past multiple questions about F1: The Movie becoming an actual franchise.

“I would want to drive again, selfishly speaking. F1 is still the focus. It needs to be on Joshua Pierce – Damson Idris’s character – and the rest of the team fighting for a championship. Where does Sonny fit in? I’m not sure. Sonny’s probably out on the Bonneville Salt Flats, setting speed records or something like that. So I’m not sure beyond that, just yet”, Pitt said in a recent interview with The National.

However, he doesn’t seem to be thinking about all this much just yet, taking some time to enjoy the movie’s immensely successful start.

“Right now, I’m just pleased as punch that something like this can bring people together. That’s the power of this kind of cinema,” the actor added.

Brad Pitt and Joseph Kosinski Want Tom Cruise on ‘F1: The Movie’ Sequel

  • On Rotten Tomatoes, F1: The Movie has scores of 83% and 97% from critics and viewers
  • On IMDb, the movie is rated 7.9/10

The sports drama marked Pitt and Kosinski’s first collaboration, though they’ve been planning to do a similar movie together much earlier — and the plan also included Tom Cruise.

Around a decade ago, Kosinski came up with an idea to reunite Pitt and Cruise on the screen for his own version of Ford v Ferrari, but things somehow went wrong when Cruise realised that the racing drama didn’t really have what he wanted.

“What it came down to is that we both wanted to drive, and [Tom] wanted to play Shelby, and I wanted to play Ken Miles. And when Tom realized that Carroll Shelby would not be driving much in the movie, it didn’t come through”, Pitt said, also adding that both he and Kosinski would do their best to bring Cruise on the possible sequel’s set.

“I’m not sure how that’s going to work [in a potential ‘F1’ sequel], but we’ll give it a go. I’d love to”, he said.

F1: The Movie is currently playing in theatres globally.
