So many TV shows have tried to assume this title over the years, but this is the first one that has seemingly pulled it off.

Summary:

  • Many shows have tried to become “new Game of Thrones ” over the years, but none managed to get that right.
  • FX’s latest TV show Shogun immediately received a 99% score on RT and is dominating Disney Plus’ charts.
  • Fans praise Shogun’s creators for nailing every bit of it and claim this show is indeed the new, peak GoT.

For all its flaws and imperfections, Game of Thrones — especially, peak Game of Thrones — was the world’s biggest, most ambitious and exciting TV show. Even before its finale, oh so many others tried to rival it and assume the title of the “new GoT,” but they couldn’t live up to the expectations… Until recently.

Because many fans claim this new FX show is exactly what it was hyped up to be.

FX new historical drama series Shogun only premiered a month ago, on February 26, 2024 — but it already has almost a cult following. Set in medieval Japan and following three characters whose fates intertwine amid the local power struggles, the show is dominating the Disney Plus charts, consistently booking first and second spots and losing only to the ever-so-popular soap opera Grey’s Anatomy at times.

Critics and viewers alike fell in love with Shogun: as of the time of writing, the TV series has a staggering 99% Critic Score and a 92% Audience Score to go with it. On social media, fans are praising Shogun’s showrunners, declaring its triumph.

Fans Call Shogun ‘New Game of Thrones’

Even before FX’s latest and hottest series premiered, it was widely regarded as the new Game of Thrones competitor. Some were skeptical about it; others believed in Marks and Kondo’s ability to outshine the notorious duo of Benioff and Weiss. Now, it seems, it’s a unanimous opinion: Shogun took the best from its mighty predecessor.

“Why the f*ck is Shogun so good? I really wasn’t expecting much from this show and have seen a million other movies/shows with a similar subject matter, but this is clearly something beyond that. <...> This show is really putting acting, story, and dialogue first and it’s making it one of the most enjoyable shows I’ve watched in a while. <...> It feels more like early Game of Thrones,” Reddit user sweetbeards said.

Fans in the comment section totally agree with them. People are praising the showrunner for their “love and respect to the source material” and their “respecting the craft of making television.” Shogun even stole praise for arguably one of the most things no one can quite get right lately: phenomenally well-written female characters!

It seems like there’s nothing Shogun gets wrong — and we hope it stays this way.
