Bronte’s True Identity in You Season 5, Explained

There’s a new object of Joe Goldberg’s affection in You’s season 5, but she’s not that simple as she seems — here’s why she’s finally the one to bring the show’s biggest villain down.
The Penn Badgley-led psychological thriller series You is back with its final season dropped on Netflix several days ago, and its new character is just like no one you have ever seen before.
The show’s newest instalment doesn’t waste much time before introducing the viewers to Madeline Brewer’s Bronte, a young woman who Joe finds at the Mooney’s, that one bookstore everything started with.
However, she isn’t just another potential victim that Joe can easily manipulate with — even though things shift radially as the season progresses.
Bronte’s Relationship With Joe, Explained
Joe meets Bronte in the new season’s first episode, finding her asleep in the closed bookstore and starting up a conversation, later becoming convinced that her “bookish” name is in fact the sign of fate.
Even though Joe is now a married man, he doesn’t really hesitate to give a chance to his relationships with Bronte who, according to the latter’s actress Madeline Brewer, “likes romance novels, fairy smut, and Internet sleuthing”.
The reasons for Joe’s growing obsession are pretty obvious.
As You's leading actor Penn Badgley highlighted in an interview with Tudum, it’s clear that Joe would definitely fall for a girl who has “this tattered cardigan hanging off her shoulders with a short skirt and Doc Martens. This dramatic, kind of sexy little bob. And she’s talking about books”.
Soon Joe finds a way to get Bronte closer to him, offering her a job in his bookstore; eventually, both develop romantic feelings for each other.
Bronte Isn’t Who She Wants to Seem
However, a major plot twist enters mid-season 5, revealing that Bronte’s real name is Louise Flannery and she’s none other than a good friend of Beck, the young woman who became Joe’s first victim in You’s season 1.
Having found out about Beck’s relationship with Joe that she started not long before her death, Louise moves to New York City and comes up with a plan to catch Joe and bring him to justice if his involvement in Beck’s murder is confirmed.
However, pretty much nothing goes according to her plan, but this still results in a happy ending that You’s viewers have been waiting for so long.
