Caitriona Balfe's Sense and Sensibility 2026 movie release: US date October 16, and the Outlander star plays the mother
A new Sense and Sensibility arrives roughly once a generation, everyone loses their minds, and a nation of costume-drama enjoyers files into theaters clutching tote bags. This is the good kind of inevitability.
The headline logistics: the new Sense and Sensibility opens in US theaters October 16 via Focus Features, after premiering in Leicester Square and rolling out in the UK in late September. Working Title is producing, which should reassure anyone who imprinted on the 2005 Pride & Prejudice hand flex at a formative age.
The delicious casting wrinkle is right there in the billing: Caitríona Balfe — who spent eight seasons of Outlander being the most capable woman in any century she landed in — is playing Mrs. Dashwood. The mom. The widowed matriarch whose main canonical activities are grieving, hoping and being politely evicted.
Except Balfe has no interest in playing her as wallpaper. "I've always played women who are much more on the forward foot," she told IMAGE. "What I loved about Mrs Dashwood was her pure love and optimism."
"It's slightly girlish, but it's not silly or frivolous. One of my very first conversations with Georgia, we went back to the text and there was a line about her optimism and I hooked onto that as the core of the character."
The Georgia in question is director Georgia Oakley (Blue Jean), working from a script by novelist Diana Reid, and the Dashwood household around Balfe is stacked:
- Daisy Edgar-Jones as Elinor, the sense;
- Esmé Creed-Miles as Marianne, the sensibility;
- George MacKay as Edward Ferrars, Herbert Nordrum as Colonel Brandon, Frank Dillane as Willoughby;
- Fiona Shaw as Mrs. Jennings, because casting directors know what we deserve.
Edgar-Jones, for her part, is on a mission to rescue Elinor from the "quietly suffers in a bonnet" file: "I didn't want her to be passive, I wanted her to be really active." Between that, Oakley's reputation for prickly intimacy and a mother Dashwood with main-character wattage, this is shaping up as the rare Austen redo with an actual point of view — and early reviews out of the UK have been largely on its side.
