Now, let's get to the bottom of the franchise's complicated fate.

Since the conclusion of Game of Thrones, HBO has relentlessly tried to expand the universe created by George R.R. Martin. Over the years, the network has announced, put into development, or quietly canceled nearly a dozen projects, ranging from ambitious prequels to animated experiments.

1. 'House of the Dragon', 2022-...

House of the Dragon remains the primary GoT spinoff. Created by Ryan Condal, the series chronicles the rise and fall of the Targaryens through the eyes of Rhaenyra during her youth and formative years.

The fourth and final season of the spinoff will likely not air until 2028. Condal promises a scale that surpasses Season 3.

Anyone familiar with the original series knows the outcome: the civil war will end with the death of the dragons and the weakening of the dynasty, allowing Robert Baratheon to overthrow the Targaryens years later.

2. 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms', 2026-...

The Game of Thrones prequel follows the wandering knight Dunk and his young squire, Egg, destined to become King Aegon V Targaryen.

The first season was based on the novella The Hedge Knight, and the second season will be based on the second novel The Sworn Sword. Production on the second season wrapped in August 2026, and the premiere is expected in 2027.

Show creator Ira Parker plans to film several stories featuring Dunk and Egg, take a multi-year break, and then return to the characters played by Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell.

3. 'Ten Thousand Ships'

Status: Planned

This potential spinoff will take place approximately 1,000 years before the events of the original series and tell the story of Nymeria, the legendary Queen of the Rhoynar after whom Arya Stark's direwolf was named.

The series underwent several team changes and was even canceled, but HBO later resumed production and handed the pilot to Eboni Booth.

Ten Thousand Ships is one of the most difficult stories to adapt. While the show has the potential to expand the franchise's geographic reach, a spinoff requires an enormous production budget.

4. 'The Golden Empire'

Status: Planned

The Golden Empire is a potential animated series set in the state of Yi Ti in eastern Essos. Martin confirmed the project's production in 2022.

While Westeros was modeled after medieval Europe, Yi Ti incorporates features of imperial China. Instead of depicting another branch of familiar aristocratic houses, the show could depict a society shaped by a different history and religion.

This new format and different culture, set in a region barely explored in the original source material, could give the project an advantage or turn it into a standalone fantasy.

5. 'Aegon's Conquest'

Status: In Development

The most unexpected twist was the decision to bring Aegon the Conqueror's story to the big screen.

Matthew Tomlin initially worked on the script, but after Warner Bros. shifted the project from a series to a feature film, Beau Willimon, creator of House of Cards and co-writer of Andor, took over. In August 2026, it was announced that the movie would premiere after 2027.

Aegon I Targaryen is already part of the Game of Thrones universe: the character is mentioned numerous times in the books and TV series. Like House of the Dragon, the film will take us back in time, 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

6. Untitled Arya Stark Spinoff

Status: Planned/In Development

In early 2026, news surfaced of an untitled project about Arya Stark traveling beyond the known maps in the finale of the original series. Quoc Dang Tran, who previously worked on Drops of God, will likely write the script.

Conceptually, it's a mirror version of the abandoned Jon Snow series. In both cases, HBO is attempting to exploit a character in geographical and narrative isolation – while Jon is in the North, Arya has the opportunity to explore the uncharted West.

7. 'Nine Voyages'

Status: In Development

Initially, Nine Voyages was intended to be a live-action project about Corlys Velaryon. However, due to the scope of the show's story, the decision was made to release it as an animated series.

Genndy Tartakovsky, creator of Samurai Jack and Primal, is leading the production. It makes sense to change the format: The Sea Snake travels through dozens of ports and remote lands, which would require enormous resources to recreate.

George R.R. Martin confirmed that the format change was due to production difficulties. There is no exact premiere date yet, only that Nine Voyages is in development.

8. 'Bloodmoon'

Status: Canceled

In 2018, HBO produced a pilot for the show at a cost of approximately $30 million. Naomi Watts was cast as the lead, and Jane Goldman served as the showrunner.

The story was set thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, at a time when Westeros was an entirely different place. The project aimed to reveal the origins of the White Walkers, the first Long Night, and the Starks.

However, after much deliberation, HBO decided not to move forward with the series, despite the fact that company executives said the pilot was not bad and looked impressive.

9. Untitled Jon Snow Spinoff

Status: Canceled

The original plan for the series was to depict Jon Snow's grim fate following the events of Game of Thrones. However, HBO was dissatisfied with the concept because it was too depressing.

After lengthy discussions, the creators were unable to conceive of a plot that would justify the character's return, so they canceled the project. Kit Harington later admitted that he was tired of playing Jon Snow and didn't want to reprise the role.

10. Untitled Flea Bottom Spinoff

Status: Canceled

Announced in 2021, the project about Flea Bottom, the poorest district of King's Landing, was far more modest than the other plans.

After telling stories about the great houses' wars, HBO attempted to focus on the lives of the lower classes. However, the show never progressed beyond the initial concept stage and was canceled.

11. Untitled Doom of Valyria Spinoff

Status: Unknown

In 2018, a project about the fall of Valyria, the Targaryens' civilization, was announced. Produced by Max Borenstein, the show was intended to depict the Doom of Valyria, the event that destroyed the ancient empire.

Unfortunately, there haven't been any significant updates to the project in a long time. Perhaps this will change if Aegon's Conquest proves successful and draws more attention to the Targaryen origins.
