Cas & Crowley Cut Scene is the Biggest Missed Opportunity of Supernatural's Season 9
Supernatural is one of those shows that has a massive number of deleted scenes.
This is to be expected as it ran for an impressive 15 seasons, totalling 327 episodes. Some have been included as special features on DVD releases, and others have been slyly linked through other means, finding their way onto YouTube and other similar viewing platforms.
While fans seem to accept most of the deleted scenes being removed, understand the issues of pacing, and know the need for episodes to stick to a specific length. But one deleted scene has drawn a big reaction from Supernatural fans, with them feeling it should have remained in the show. That scene, in particular, comes from season nine and features Castiel and Crowley.
Fans have taken to Reddit to express their belief that this scene being edited out was a missed opportunity for the show. It featured Castiel and Crowley sitting together, watching television.
Now, this was not the only deleted scene from the season that prompted this discussion. There was another one where Dean checks on Cas and Crowley in a paternal way, and while subtle, it felt beautiful. And a third is where Crowley is present while Sam and Dean are having a confidential discussion and he is just relaxing reading a book as if his presence in their home is completely normal.
It all conveys the warm feeling of former enemies now being allied. And it's not an uneasy alliance but an alliance of comfort and normality that everyone seems to be completely comfortable with.
All three scenes would have helped to paint a stronger picture of the shifting nature of these character relationships. But the main one that fans wish was still there was Cas and Crowley watching television. The feeling is this scene captured so much detail in such a short amount of time and almost effortlessly.
Crowley and Castiel had a complicated relationship, to say the least.
They were born from rival species, Crowley a Crossroad Demon, and Castiel an angel. With every reason to loathe each other, they were unaware of each other's existence until season five, when fate and the Winchester brothers brought them together. What follows is a series of uneasy alliances, betrayals, and vicious fights. Their rivalry provided some of the most entertaining scenes in all of Supernatural.
For this deleted scene of the two of them calmly watching television together to be removed, fans feel cheated out of a warm and tender moment between the characters.
Not overly so, as that would be outside the nature of both of them. But to see Cas and Crowley completely peaceful and relaxed in each other's company would have gone a long way to explaining later events in the season. Such as why Cas and Sam seemed to feel so betrayed when Dean and Crowley sided together against them.
The deleted scenes mentioned here do not appear on any DVD release at the time of writing, with fans sourcing them via YouTube. It is not confirmed how the footage found its way there. But it is clear the fans lament this wonderful scene being removed.
