The HBO series has been pretty indifferent towards Abby ever since that heartbreaking episode featuring Joel’s gruesome end. However, things are about to change — here’s what The Last of Us’ actress Catherine O’Hara had to say about the show’s future.

The long-lasting feud between the fans of “The Last of Us” game and its HBO adaptation might die down just a little bit when a third season comes along.

Greenlit even before The Last of Us’ season 2 premiered back in April, the show’s next instalment will be adapting those events that unfold in the second chapter of “The Last of Us Part II”, though there’s a chance that the HBO series will go even further than that.

Still, even with some controversy surrounding Craig Mazin’s last revelations about his plans for The Last of Us, it does seem like the third season may finally address one of the biggest issues the game’s fans had with Abby’s introduction.

Even though Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby is currently nowhere to be found in The Last of Us’ season 2, she will likely get a bigger role in the ongoing instalment’s upcoming finale — and an even bigger one in The Last of Us’ season 3.

At least, this is what Catherine O’Hara hinted at while revealing whether she would appear in the show’s future seasons.

“I don’t know. Craig [Mazin] did say definitely not this next season. It’s the Abby story. Maybe. But I think it was to serve Joel and Ellie”, the actress said in an interview with Variety.

Apart from many other problems that the video game players had with its TV version, one of the biggest complaints about HBO’s The Last of Us was the show’s deliberate decision to mostly ignore Abby’s revenge path and opt for a focus on Ellie instead.

While the game shifted between both Ellie and Abby, letting players take control of both characters and get to know their personality better, the HBO series has so far been pretty uninterested in Abby’s side of the story.

‘The Last of Us’ Has a “Decent Chance” to Expand to More Than 3 Seasons, Craig Mazin says

It might be that the show performs extremely well even with waves of backlash hitting it every so often, but The Last of Us’ original plans for 3 seasons only might have just been modified.

“The thing about Joel’s death is that it’s so impactful. It’s such a narrative nuclear bomb that it’s hard to wander away from it. We can’t really take a break and move off to the side and do a Bill and Frank story. I’m not sure that will necessarily be true for Season 3. I think we’ll have a little more room there. But certainly, there’s no way to complete this narrative in a third season. Hopefully, we’ll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth. That’s the most likely outcome”, Mazin revealed in an interview with Collider recently.

It’s not clear yet what a potential fourth season will be based on, since the original game’s plot doesn’t go any further after “The Last of Us Part II”, which is what seasons 2 and 3 are believed to be based on.

When Is ‘The Last of Us’ Next Episode Being Released?

The second season’s finale will arrive on Max on May 25.
