Craig Mazin’s ‘The Last of Us’ Season 4 Hints Are Already Bad News for Fans

The HBO series isn’t done yet with the story that the second part of the original video game has to tell. However, The Last of Us’ fans don’t think the creators’ new update on the show’s run makes any sense at all.
The Last of Us’ second season is just one episode away from being officially over with a third instalment eventually picking the story up, though the series’ showrunners aren’t ready to say goodbye to it just yet.
Sometime before the sophomore season premiered back in April, The Last of Us was renewed for a third season, paving the way for the show to wrap the story told in the second part of “The Last of Us”’ second game.
However, it might be that Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann’s plans for the hit series go way beyond the events of the original game, and it’s pretty clear why fans of both media don’t get it.
‘The Last of Us’ Craig Mazin Says “There’s No Way” the Show Ends With Season 3
Even though the entire series’ initial structure clearly suggested that the first season will follow the first video game’s events while the second game’s occurrences will get split between seasons 2 and 3, it seems like the showrunners changed their mind at some point.
“I think there’s a decent chance that Season 3 will be longer than Season 2, just because the manner of that narrative and the opportunities it affords us are a little different. The thing about Joel’s death is that it’s so impactful. It’s such a narrative nuclear bomb that it’s hard to wander away from it. We can’t really take a break and move off to the side and do a Bill and Frank story. I’m not sure that will necessarily be true for Season 3. I think we’ll have a little more room there”, The Last of Us’ co-creator Craig Mazin revealed in an interview with Collider recently.
‘The Last of Us’ Fans Think Season 4 Is All About Money
With the video game’s narrative ending in the franchise’s second game, it seems pretty obvious that there’s no other way for The Last of Us TV adaptation to continue, except for inventing more events of its own, which isn’t what fans would want anyway.
“Well you could just do more than 7 episodes per season…” Redditor LuxReflexio commented in a thread, criticising Mazin for cutting the second season to 7 episodes while the first instalment included 9 episodes.
Odysesseus then replied to the previous comment, wondering “But then how else would they milk it?”.
“Seattle hospital, rat king, end the series. Boom”, chickenbrofredo suggested.
“Goddamn, it's The Walking Dead seasons 7 and 8 all over again, there's no need to stretch it out so long. Two seasons I can live with but three? Really? What for?”, Evil-Cetacean complained.
When Is ‘The Last of Us’ Next Episode Coming?
The Last of Us season 2 finale will arrive on Max on May 25.
