The star says the cast saw the end coming. The showrunner who left mid-post-production and a booing Comic Con hall suggest the audience didn't.

Marvel made it official at its New York Comic Con TV panel on October 8: Daredevil: Born Again ends with season 3, which has already wrapped and premieres on Disney+ in spring 2027. The room booed. Charlie Cox, on stage, deadpanned "Wait, what?" — and then, in an interview with Collider at the convention, gave the on-record version:

"No, it wasn't that much of a surprise."

— Charlie Cox, to Collider

Cox says the cast knew the show was ending. That is the tidy version of events, and it sits awkwardly next to the untidy ones. The Hollywood Reporter's September 21 story that first revealed the ending also reported that showrunner Dario Scardapane left the show in the middle of post-production, under circumstances nobody has explained. Shows that conclude on schedule don't usually shed their showrunner between the wrap party and the premiere.

Why the room booed

The skepticism isn't abstract; it's muscle memory. This exact audience has run this exact play before:

  • 2018: Netflix cancels Daredevil after three acclaimed seasons. The #SaveDaredevil campaign runs for years and gets Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio resurrected on Disney+.
  • September 2025: Marvel confirms season 3 — with no word that it's the last.
  • September 21, 2026: THR reports the show is ending with season 3, alongside Scardapane's mid-post exit.
  • October 8, 2026: Marvel confirms it at NYCC. The hall boos. Mike Colter is absent from the Defenders panel, which Cox admitted the cast had only just learned themselves.

Cox, to his credit, didn't try to talk the room down. He leaned in:

"I imagine the 'Save Daredevil' campaign will be gearing up for round two."

He added that nobody wants to invite the wrath of the Save Daredevil people — a joke from a man who owes his second run as Matt Murdock to exactly that wrath.

Daredevil has now been ended after season 3 by two different companies. The first time, the fans overturned it.

What's actually in season 3

Whatever the circumstances, the finale is loaded. The season brings the Defenders back together: Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones, Mike Colter's Luke Cage, Finn Jones' Iron Fist, and Élodie Yung's Elektra all return alongside Cox and D'Onofrio's Kingpin, with Wilson Bethel's Bullseye pushed toward his comics killer-for-hire mode. Cox told IGN the reunion brings the story "full circle" and offers closure.

As for Matt Murdock after 2027, Cox stopped short of announcements but told ScreenRant he's confident something follows. Between a character too popular to shelve, a fanbase with a proven resurrection on its résumé, and an actor openly predicting round two of the campaign, "ending" might once again be the least permanent word in Marvel's vocabulary.
