Rian Johnson has a pitch for Poker Face season 3 that nobody saw coming. What he doesn't have, almost a year later, is a buyer.

Let's be clear about the release date: there isn't one, because there isn't a network. Peacock declined to renew Poker Face in November 2025, even though the show finished its second season as one of the streamer's most-watched series. Rian Johnson, his T-Street partner Ram Bergman, and studio MRC immediately started shopping it elsewhere, with one condition and one twist. The condition: a two-season commitment. The twist: Natasha Lyonne is out as Charlie Cale, and Peter Dinklage is in.

Why Peacock walked away from a hit

On paper, canceling one of your most-watched originals makes no sense. In practice, the math was working against Poker Face from a few directions at once:

  • It was expensive. Every episode is built around a different big-name guest star playing the killer, and that adds up.
  • Ratings slipped. Season 2, which ran from May 8 to July 10, 2025, didn't quite match the first season, the one that earned four Emmy nominations, including one for Lyonne.
  • Peacock didn't own it. As The Hollywood Reporter pointed out, the show was produced by T-Street and the independent MRC Television, not by NBCUniversal. Streamers keep their own shows alive much more readily than ones they're essentially renting.

The Dinklage plan

The recast wasn't a reaction to the cancellation, according to Johnson and Lyonne. "We've been germinating this next move together since writing the season two finale," they said in a joint statement. The long-term idea is to treat Charlie the way James Bond gets treated, with a new actor every two seasons. Lyonne would stay on as an executive producer, and Johnson would write and direct as much as his schedule allows.

Lyonne has since been more candid about why she stepped back. Speaking to Collider in July 2026, she said she and Johnson had imagined something closer to Columbo: a handful of episodes a year, all written and directed by Johnson, going on indefinitely. "We thought we're going to be making it forever," she said. Instead, the show turned into a far bigger production than either of them had planned.

Eleven months of shopping

The most promising lead so far came from HBO. In November 2025, HBO chief Casey Bloys confirmed there had been conversations, then added, "I love the idea of Peter Dinklage, but I have nothing to report on that." Two months later, the would-be new Charlie explained where things stood:

"It's just hard to take it from one home to put it in another."

Since then, nobody has announced a deal. And HBO, the one outlet that publicly admitted interest, now has bigger things on its plate: its parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, was set to be absorbed by Paramount Skydance on October 6, 2026, with Bloys overseeing the integration of the HBO Max and Paramount+ teams.

MobLand season 3 was renewed before season 2 even premiered — so when is the release date?

So when could season 3 actually come out?

Even with a buyer, not soon. Season 1 was announced in March 2021 and premiered in January 2023. Season 2 was renewed in February 2023 and premiered in May 2025, with the 2023 strikes in between. A season 3 would need a new network, a new deal, a new writers' room, and a new lead finding his version of Charlie.

Even if someone bought Poker Face tomorrow, the show's own track record points to 2028 at the earliest.

As for Lyonne, she told Deadline in December 2025 that she loves Dinklage, loves Johnson, and could always pop back up.
