Cillian Murphy Despised One Thing About 'Peaky Blinders', and It's Not the Priest: "I Was Alarmed"

Peaky Blinders was not only a great series, but also somewhat of a trendsetter. However, there was one aspect of his character that Cillian Murphy hated, and here's what it was.
Cillian Murphy's roles in The Dark Knight and Inception proved that he fits perfectly into both art-house and big-budget commercial films. However, the actor still lacked major roles.
Fortunately, Peaky Blinders changed that – gangster Tommy Shelby, played by Murphy, became an icon and one of the most popular characters in the TV industry.
Cillian Murphy Hates Thomas Shelby's Famous Hairstyle
Peaky Blinders' main distinguishing feature is its style. Costume designers drew inspiration from real gangsters of the early 20th century, and they also borrowed haircuts that became popular after the series was released.
However, it turned out that Cillian Murphy hated one thing about Peaky Blinders – that very hairstyle. In an interview with the Belfast Telegraph, the actor admitted:
“I was alarmed by the haircut, I have to admit, but I'm contractually obliged to have it.”
Also, in a conversation with Vulture, Cillian said:
“I've gotten more tolerant of the haircut over the years. And bizarrely, it's become a desirable cut amongst the fashionistas, which is staggering to me. It's one more sign of how the show has infiltrated the mainstream culture.”
Moreover, this hairstyle has its own history – initially, soldiers got their hair cut this way during World War I to prevent lice from spreading.
Style Was One of the Most Important Aspects of 'Peaky Blinders'
A significant portion of the Peaky Blinders budget went to tailoring. The tweed three-piece suits were paired with long wool coats lined with silk and rough high-top leather boots.
Accessories are another important part of the characters' images: Thomas Shelby, for example, wears a cap instead of a hat to pay tribute to his roots and a massive gold watch chain to indicate that he has Gypsy ancestry.
The women in the series dress fashionable, too. Thomas' aunt Polly was an example of impeccable style. She wore a gray three-piece suit, black glasses, and a wide-brimmed hat that emphasized her strong personality.
What's more, costume designers from Game of Thrones worked on Tommy's wife Grace's outfits.
Steven Knight Even Founded His Own Tailoring Brand
After Peaky Blinders was released, Steven Knight, the creator of the show, founded Garrison Tailors, a company that produces men's clothing, so that everyone could dress like their favorite Peaky Blinders character.
David Beckham, a fan of the series and co-owner of the clothing brand Kent & Curwen, dedicated a collection to Peaky Blinders and came to the presentation dressed as Thomas Shelby.
