Criminal Minds Fans, Rise Up: Dr. Reid Finally Addresses His Possible Return to Evolution

Most of the Criminal Minds cast returned for the reboot called Evolution. However, one notable character who did not return was Spencer Reid, and he had been with the original show since season 1. Reid was not only the acknowledged genius of the BAU team, he also had a quirky personality that made him a fan favorite.

Although Matthew Gray Gubler did not come back to Evolution in season 1, viewers hoped that this did not mean he was leaving the show for good.

With various Evolution characters mentioning him or considering asking him about his experience, this could be a sign that Reid will return in the later seasons. And judging by the actor’s own comments, there is a good chance that this will be the case.

In the interview with The Six O'Clock Show, Matthew shared why he didn't join the cast of Evolution’s in season 1 and his thoughts on returning. The actor was asked if he would play Dr. Reid again:

“Of course! I would be honored. I would absolutely love that. They did a newer spin-off of the show, but it was filming during a time when I was shooting something else. But I can't wait — hopefully it will soon work out," he said.

Well, now all we can do is keep our fingers crossed and hope that Dr. Reid will be back in season 2, at least in a small role.

Though Criminal Minds: Evolution’s season 2 was greenlit back in January 2023, strikes pushed the premiere date back indefinitely. Now that production is back on track, the next release window fans can hope for is spring 2024.

It is not news that, unlike season 1, the new chapter will focus more on the personal story of Emily Prentiss. Considering that Dr. Reid and Emily had a warm relationship in the original series, Matthew's return could help diversify and enrich that storyline.
