Ethan Hunt returns with new impossible stunts, staggering vistas and sandstorms to surprise fans in the first trailer of the highly anticipated summer blockbuster.

'Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1' finally got its first trailer, showing the returning stars and the huge scope of the upcoming dilogy, advertised as the magnificent conclusion to the story Cruise's super spy. Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson and Vanessa Kirby will reprise their roles in the film, with Pom Clementieff, Rob Delaney and Hayley Atwell joining the cast as the new recruits.

Here's what was shown in the trailer:

Henry Czerny returns as Eugene Kittridge

The trailer opens with a surprise right from the start -- Henry Czerny's Kittridge finally returns after disappearing from the franchise after the first installment in 1996. Back then, Kittridge was portrayed as a villain targeting Ethan and his crew, believing that they were the moles he was after. After the dust settled, Kittridge mended his relationship with Hunt, becoming a fan-favorite character, but never returned for another Mission Impossible movie. This unfortunate turn of events will be finally corrected in the 'Dead Reckoning', and the interrogation scene in which Kittridge convinces Hunt to give up spying is sure to delight audiences when the film comes out next year.

Main villain revealed?

Another big surprise for avid moviegoers is the long-awaited first look at the film's supposed main villain, played by veteran actor Esai Morales. The trailer showed him fighting and doing many other things, but in such an action-packed clip it's pretty hard to understand Morales' character's motivations. So, for now fans should just relax and absorb information about him being a bad guy, as the actor's recent stint on the Netflix series 'Ozarks' proves that he is more than capable of sending some serious shivers down the spine.

Some of the locations are finally confirmed

Endless deserts, the English countryside, the depths of the oceans, the ancient cities of Rome and Venice, and the Scandinavian wilderness to spice things up. It looks like the scale of the upcoming blockbuster will be monumentally high, with characters jumping from one beautiful place to another, fighting and performing stunts without respite. A great way to visit the world during a pandemic, don't you think?

Rebecca Ferguson's Ilsa Faust wearing an eyepatch

The image of Ferguson's Ilsa Faust taking aim with a sniper rifle while wearing an eyepatch is sure to leave a mark in the minds of many fans who have watched the trailer. This baffling choice of accessory has yet to be explained, and perhaps a future trailer will show some serious injury. Ilsa has been shown both with and without the eyepatch, but it seems that fans have already decided which way they want to see her more.

That motorcycle cliff stunt

And finally, to wrap up the trailer for all its glory, Paramount presented the first look at the legendary motorcycle cliff jump / skydiving stunt that Cruise has been preparing for endlessly. And yes, it does look great and is adrenaline-inducing, proving that Cruise is still on top of his game. Don't try this at home!

'Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One' is set to premier on July 14, 2023.
