Cyberpunk Edgerunners: what happened to Lucy? Edgerunners 2 arrives October 20 — and Lucy isn't in the cast
Lucy survives the first series and makes it to the moon, alone. The sequel arriving on Netflix on October 20 follows an entirely new crew, and none of the announced characters is her.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners premiered on Netflix on September 13, 2022, a 10-episode anime from Studio Trigger and CD Projekt Red set in the Night City of Cyberpunk 2077. It follows David Martinez, a struggling student at Arasaka Academy who, after a personal tragedy, falls for a netrunner named Lucy and joins her crew of edgerunners, mercenaries kept running on cyberware. Lucy, full name Lucyna Kushinada, is voiced by Aoi Yūki in Japanese and Emi Lo in English, and her one recurring dream is getting off-world to the moon.
Spoilers for the full first series follow.
How Lucy's story ends
The finale is a rescue that costs almost everyone. Lucy has been taken by Faraday, and David, already sliding into cyberpsychosis and running on immunosuppressants, takes on Arasaka to get her back. Here's how it plays out:
- The rescue — David reaches Lucy, and Faraday falls to his death.
- Adam Smasher — Arasaka sends its signature killer. Smasher crushes Rebecca to death in front of them.
- The escape — at David's request, the driver Falco gets Lucy out. Smasher shoots off Falco's arm as they go.
- David's death — David stays behind to fight Smasher and is killed.
- The moon — some time later, Lucy finally makes the trip David wanted for her. She walks on the moon alone and sees him beside her for a moment.
Lucy and Falco are the only members of the crew seen alive at the end, and Falco does not appear in the moon scene.
The show gives Lucy her dream and takes away the only person she wanted to share it with. That's the whole ending, and it's why fans kept asking where she went next.
Why she isn't in Edgerunners 2
CD Projekt Red announced the sequel at Anime Expo on July 4, 2025, and described it from the start as a standalone story with a different crew. Kai Ikarashi is directing; his work on the first series' sixth episode, "Girl on Fire," is what convinced Sztybor to hire him. Bartosz Sztybor returns as writer and showrunner, and Trigger is animating again. The release date, October 20, 2026, came with a teaser in August, and all 10 episodes arrive at once.

The four leads are new characters:
- Weak Kingsley — a veteran edgerunner once known as "King," now living in the shadow of his former glory. Clancy Brown voices him in English.
- D — a Snake Nation netrunner hunting the killer who wiped out his clan.
- Roman Carax — a young cinephile trying to document real stories in a city that has traded film for braindance.
- Talia Yang — the rebellious daughter of a corporate family who throws herself into the Maelstrom gang's chrome-obsessed culture.
None of them is Lucy, and none of the first series' characters has been announced. At the 2025 panel, Sztybor confirmed that David and Rebecca are dead. When he got to Lucy, he said only "And Lucy is…" and moved on to the rest of the presentation. Netflix and CD Projekt Red have not ruled out a cameo, but they haven't confirmed one either.
Where Lucy has shown up since
Lucy hasn't disappeared from the franchise. In August 2025 she joined Guilty Gear Strive as a playable guest fighter, the series' first crossover character, with monowire attacks and quickhacks taken from Cyberpunk 2077, plus story cutscenes featuring David and Rebecca.
The anime itself is set about a year before the events of Cyberpunk 2077, so in Night City's timeline, Lucy's story ends somewhere just before the game begins. Until October 20, the moon is the last place anyone has officially seen her.
