Dakota Johnson Hates 'Materialists' Cheesiest Line As Much As You Do

“When I see your face, I see wrinkles and children that look like you.” Lucy from Materialists may have loved that line by her ex, but Dakota Johnson can’t stand it.
Celine Song’s newest rom-com hit, Materialists, has already caused a lot of buzz on social media with people fuming over (or defending) the final choice of Dakota Johnson’s Lucy. Be careful: heavy spoilers for the movie are incoming!
Materialists sees New York’s successful match-maker Lucy torn between two men: Pedro Pascal’s Harry, who is a charming billionaire, and John, a much less wealthy caterer and also Lucy’s ex. In the end, Lucy picks John — and her decision doesn’t sit well with many viewers.
Turns out, Dakota Johnson herself isn’t particularly fond of some creative choices in Materialists. For example, the infamous “When I see your face, I see wrinkles and children that look like you” by John. Some say it was oh so romantic, but for others — Johnson included — it was peak cringe.
“I hated that line,” Dakota revealed in an interview with MTV’s Josh Horowitz. “‘When I look at your face, I see wrinkles.’ That’s all I heard. For the entire movie, for every single scene we had together. [...] Can you imagine enjoying that scene? No.”
Chris Evans, who portrayed John, wasn’t so merciless about the line. The actor admitted that he felt the line started out wrong and didn't really convey the message properly, but director Celine Song convinced him it was okay.
“This is a testament to Celine because I agreed with that sentiment,” said Evans. “[...] I do think it works.”
What’s Wrong With the ‘Materialists’ Ending?
On social media, there are two camps: one believes that Materialists verges on the so-called “broke boy propaganda” and finds the ending virtually unbelievable; and the other is glad that Lucy chose love over money.
“Maybe because I'm older, or because my husband recently passed away, but the lines about choosing a "grave partner" and the "when I look at your face, I see wrinkles and gray hair and children..." were so impactful,” said Redditor Loveroflife5.
Sounds romantic? Not for everyone.
“There was zero crackle to the dialogue, they somehow made Pedro boring, and when your lead’s supposedly most romantic monologue starts with “when I look at you I see wrinkles” you know the script needed a second pass. Hated it, will never watch again,” said Redditor Silver_South_1002.
Materialists is currently in theaters.
