Dark Matter: how many Jasons are there? The count, season by season — and why it jumped after the finale
For most of season 1 the answer is two, which is manageable. The finale replaces that number with a crowd, and season 2 has not brought it back down.
Apple has never published a canonical figure, and the show's own mechanics make one impossible. The box branches on decisions, not on trips — every choice made during transit can spin off another version of the same man, and every one of those versions has the same motive, the same face, and the same wife to go home to. What follows is the count as the series has actually shown it, through the four season 2 episodes aired as of 23 September 2026.
Season 1: two, then more
The season runs on a duel. Jason1 is the original, the physics teacher who took the family option. Jason2 is the version who took the career instead, built the box, and then abducted his counterpart to take the life he skipped. That's the whole premise: one house, one Daniela, two men with an equal claim.
The number starts climbing in the back half, once Jason1 has used the box himself and other variants work out what's happened. By the finale, "Entanglement," the show has stopped counting and started crowding.

The finale is where the count breaks
The Jasons find each other. They coordinate on a message board, which is the show's neatest joke about the premise — a support group of identical men negotiating custody of the same family. Recaps describe the numbers as dozens converging on the Dessens' country house, tracked there by a device planted on their car.
The ones the finale distinguishes by name or description:
- Jason1 — the original, the one the audience has followed.
- Jason2 — the abductor and the box's creator. He turns, returns Jason1's wedding band, clears the family's path, and stays behind to face the rest.
- Jason37 — works the message board, sending private messages to recruit Jason1.
- Jason In the Hat — run over by the Dessens' car during the escape.
- Shotgun Jason — killed by Jason2 at the safe house.
- An injured Jason — found outside the safe house and shot.
The family gets out by injecting the ampoules that let a human mind survive the transit, then stepping into a new world with Charlie going first. Which means the world they leave is still full of Jasons, and the show never cleans it up.
The count did not jump because the box got busier. It jumped because the Jasons found each other, and a group of identical men with identical goals is a different problem than a rival.
Season 2: a moving number
Season 2 premiered on 28 August 2026, ten episodes running weekly on Fridays through 30 October. Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly return, with Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi and Oakes Fegley. The story runs past Blake Crouch's novel, which is where the original count came from in the first place.
By episode 3, "Everything Beautiful, Everything Terrible," on 11 September 2026, the working tally is at least two again in the new setting: Jason1, living with Daniela and Charlie and trying to dismantle the box, and a second Jason encountered by Amanda and Ryan somewhere else in the multiverse.
The honest answer is that the show is not keeping a ledger. It's keeping a threat.
For the record: the message board is the only census the series has ever offered, and nobody on it is a reliable narrator.
